Thanks Steptoe for tip. I found my grandfathers service record in there already digitised. It was quite interesting read, as he died shortly after I was born, so I really didnt know a lot about his involvement and deployment, but this gives some clues. EJ22 is pretty bullet proof, can take a fair hiding, but the EJ20G will just give the rest of you car a hiding and be forever fixing stuff.

Sounds like a bad ground or neg cable. Check main ground terminals and connections for tightness and corrosion. See if this improves things.
