Converting dual range 4WD L-series from 3.7 to 3.9
I've just brought home an '85 model L-series that is only high range 4WD through the push button on the gearshift. This operates on the 3.9 diff ratio. However, my project car is a '91 model, has 3.7 diff's in it and it's a dual range gearbox. While both are manual cars I wondered if it was possible...

EA82 engine - leaded or unleaded
I'm considering swapping the engine from my 'new' spare parts car I picked up yesterday to my "project". Both are 5sp manual EA82 L-series 4WD wagons. However my project car is a '91 model and my spare car's an '85 model so there's a lot of various changes between them. Filling the car up with petro...

Sorry, I don't know how many are going on the trip. Could be anywhere between 3 and 20 cars. More likely to be around 5 since it's a serious off road drive and there's another camping trip on this weekend. It's great to see your enthusiasm fellas :D I can't make it this weekend. My family has flown ...

Gymkhanas and/or rallying nearby Sydney?
Is anyone doing gymkhanas and/or rallying nearby Sydney with their L-series or MY-series Subaru? By chance, I met a fellow who is the President of the Lower Blue Mountains Christian Car Club (LBCCC) and they seem to be a good bunch of fellas who race gymkhanas regularly along with a number of other ...

Mudrat, I completely understand where you're coming from. I used to feel the same. However, it's simply a matter of us getting involved in Subaru clubs that makes them populated with them. If we don't get involved then there's nothing else to happen but see them become populated with divorced owners...

I've got some solid advice regarding the use of Menai for you. The word is that you do have to be a member of a club that is also a member of the 4WD association. Our NSW Subaru and Recreational 4WD Club (yeah, I know, it's a mouthful ain't it) is one such club. Membership for the year is onl...

All Navigators use the same Sensis database but that doesn't mean they are a) water or dust resistant (palm pilot type things aren't), b) able to get map updates c) able to be used out of the car d) useful during holidays with the family in towns or in the sticks 4WDing. A few months ago I got the G...

I don't know about them being ex-Ausubaru fellas. I guess they have less interest in modifying their Subies due to the cost involved (who can blame them). eg. when I toted up the cost of modifying my '02 Outback: Car $45000, lift kit $1500 installed, SubaXtreme front bar and sump guard around $1600,...

I've spoken to another member and they've told me that you have to be a club member and that the club you're with has to be a 4WD association member (most are) and ours is. Once this is the case then you can go on your own or as part of a group, whatever you want. The only thing left to ask about is...

A good question about whether you can go out any time or not once a member of the club. I don't know for certain but I'd presume it's conditional on being a club trip. I'll ask on the club forum and see what response I get. As for Menai's driving conditions. It's always given a 'hard' rating due to ...

It so happens that our Subaru club does monthly Menai Clean-Up days and that means that we go there every month for a trip. All each car has to do is get a bag of rubbish before then going on through the place and be with the club. Simple. I'll check the calendar and get back to you about the next o...

You're right about the new owners not wanting to foul up their new Subies and who can blame them, really. I was one of them for a couple of years.. from leather seats, twin sunroofs, power and touch button everything to vinyl everything for ease of cleaning, minimal electrics, modified everything - ...

Believe me when I say I completely understand where you are coming from. I used to have an 02 Outback before selling it off and getting my cheapie but a much better offroader/fun car. As far as the club is concerned it's basically been a case of membership needs. Since Subie started making cars more...

There are plenty of outings for those interested in the NSW Subaru and Recreational 4WD Club. I'm a member and I've got to say that it works out to be a great oppoortunity to show off my Subie against plenty of other makes and models. Not enough of the old school subies like we have though. At least...

Why Off-Road a Subaru?
It is interesting hearing so many experienced Subie owner/drivers/modifiers who have the same opinions. After owning a top dollar model (an 02 Outback limited - manual of course :-) ) and catching the bug for some more off-roading style fun - researching the SubaXtreme and Scorpion gear and crunchin...

Why Off-Road a Subaru?
I completely agree with the concept raised that Subaru should be creating at least slightly more factory modified, raised, lifted models. Just like a sports pack you can buy with spoilers and other rubbish, why not get really useful things to help it in the job intended, or at least HINTED at. Decen...
