You've got my encouragement fellas. I've already moved on from my L-series and miss it still. Dang it all though, you could have had my old 3.9 ratio diff a couple of months ago. It's gone now. This discussion and prospect has come up so many times over the years it's sickening but I hope your resul...

June long weekend trip
Hi guys, for those of you not in the Subaru 4WD Club, you might like to come along on a 4WD camping trip a couple of hours West of Sydney, rated "hard", that should really thrill the most keen Subie 4WD'ers out there. Trip details are as follows: Sunday: Meeting at Lithgow Maccas before heading out ...

Getting back to reality for a moment and old Subie money... have you thought of or already tried the great old boot protection idea of welding on (or otherwise attaching) some short curved arms that lead back from the rear crossmember and hold some much larger reinforced rubber (from Clarke rubber)....

Combined forum trip to Lidsdale and Mt Airlie
I'm trying to negotiate a combined trip with those in the Subaru and Recreational 4WD club and on the OffroadSubaru forum as this was a hit last time we did it. I'm putting my hand up to lead a trip out to Lidsdale State Forest and Mt Airlie (both near Capertee just outside Lithgow about 2hrs from S...

Well, congratulations on making the step to the classroom. After 12 years of teaching I can certainly tell it'll sort you out. They'll test you and make you wonder what you were like yourself as a student. They'll make you be stronger in your own personality and be proud of who you are and what you'...

As Subafury said. It's easy to take off. Just make sure you mark a cog on each of the two shafts so that when you put it back together it's all straight. Also, when putting it back together you must make sure that the flattened section of the steering column shaft lines up with the path that the bol...

Longer rear shocks for L-series
Ok, it's more the front shocks that are 'shocking' on L-series... that awful bobbing up and down - even with perfectly good new shocks is something I'd like to replace with coil-overs in the future but until then, this is something of interest to me too: I've seen a website a while ago that listed a...

Thanks for the contributions everyone has made so far. I must admit that I'm swaying toward just an EJ20 (NA) instead of a 2.5 - though I'd love to... sounds like an awful lot more stuffing around and I just don't have enough spare time, or money, to fuss with it. If I was building a racer, sure I'd...

Ok then, does anyone know how the L-series would be rated in NSW? I can guess that it's not considered anything more than a passenger car but I can be wrong... Secondly, does it make any difference to the question really? Not having weighed my unladen L-series, but guessing it at about 1130kg (prett...

An interesting read there... however, right there underneath the table showing how to calculate the maximum size engine it says that it doesn't apply to 4WD's, light trucks etc under 4.5 tonnes... so that includes our little Subies. That means that there is another page that relates to modifications...

'91 L-series wagon with 336,000 on it. No engine, gearbox or diff changes yet and the engine works really well other than some tappet noise on a hot day. It has the typical oil leaks from the rocker covers but blows no smoke and am really happy with it's servicing now. I've thrown lots of time and $...

Just to stir it up. 5 points to consider: An auto Outback will be a good investment if interested in towing more often. The auto box will reduce backlash and clunking from towing and also provide an auto's torque multiplication, better parking ease etc. For normal driving, I can't stand an auto... i...

That's exactly how I understand it to read. You can go a single or even a twin turbo 2.0 engine but as soon as you go over the 15% capacity increase to a 2.2 or 2.5 litre engine you need certification. Thanks to there being a turbo L-series that went into production we can swap our carby EA82 to a t...

L-series gearbox vibration
It seems my L-series wagon can't wait for funds to get the AWD gearbox from Jordan. In recent weeks the standard EA dual range gearbox has been making some light 'dry bearing' sounds and now it's got a decent vibration that makes the tailshaft vibrate at moderate throttle. I've taken the propeller s...

This sort of information is what I was after. No, not necessarily the Mini info but it all contributes to the point. I had a 2.25" system fitted based on what I had read on these forums over years and that size was best recommended for a good sound on the EA82 and since I'm looking to go for a bigge...
