i finally figured out the answer to my own question. When the battery totally dies it affects the keyless entry and the security system. All you have to do is hit the unlock button on your keyless remote. Too simple!

Help! My wife's about to leave town and we have a problem. She left the key in last night (2000 Forester) and we awoke to a dead battery. I jumped it and the car started.
