noise on full lock right hand turn - guessing outer CV joint
so when i'm in a full lock right hand turn with any sort of power on i'm getting cracking noise from the right front. for example accelerating right out of a T-intersection, or when accelerating out of a right hand U-turn. is that sort of noise typical of a worn/failed outer CV joint? i'm thinking t...

horn relay location 1989 Legacy Wagon
I finally found it mounted behind the interior fuse box. To get it out you have to disconnect all the connections to the fuse box, then remove the fuse box by undoing the mounting nuts at top and bottom. It's easier to get to the top nut if you remove the 3 relays at the top of the fuse box. I will ...

horn relay location 1989 Legacy Wagon
Hello - I was hoping somone could tell me where to find the horn relay on a 1989 Legacy Wagon. The manual says it's located close to the interior fuse box along with the Ventilation Fan, Front Fog Lamp (not fitted), Fuel Pump, and Ignition Relay. I've located 3 black relays connected into a connecto...

Ah I see. Caught out by the not so subtle difference between a nut and a bolt. Took the bolt out and then had to whack down on the control arm with a hammer and bit of wood. Finally got the ball joint out. Probably didn't even need to take the nut (red circle) off in the end. Drive shaft out now. Th...

Help: Front Drive Shaft Removal
Hello - Could anyone give some advice on getting the front drive shaft out of a 1989 Legacy Wagon 4WD. I've got the wheel and drive shaft nut off as per my Gregory's service manual. Now it says:- Remove pinch bolt from the lower control arm ball joint and lever down on the control arm to release the...

Thanks for the advice. Found another thread on another forum with same symptoms "5th and 4th gear 2500-3000 rpm i get a weird ass vibration. feels like im driving on the median rumble strip". It went on to mention the center diff also so at this stage is the prime suspect. Haven't had a chance to ge...

235,175kms on the clock. So she's getting fairly long in the tooth. Whatever the issue is it doesn't sound easy/cheap to fix. I'll take it to the chaps at Subaru to get the low down. If they can tell me exactly what it is then I might be able to repair/replace it myself. Otherwise I'll have to just ...

Engine/Transmission noise on deceleration
I've got a 1989 Legacy Wagon manual transmission which is making a noise on deceleration. Sounds kinda like the mudflap rubbing against the tyre. It's most noticable if I'm doing about 90km/hr in 5th and I take foot off the gas. But it also does the same thing in 4th at about 70km/hr. So it's relate...

Righto, she's all back together and running. No water leak anymore so its mission accomplished. Got my wife to hold the left exhaust cam in place with a breaker bar. Threading the timing belt was kinda easy in the end. Only thing is I have a little bit of squeaking on startup from either the A/C bel...

Thanks for the advice chaps. I also found this doc on the Internet which has a diagram which lists the number of teeth between timing marks which although must be from a more modern engine it seems identical to my EJ20. http://agentdavidson.ddns.net/STi_PERFORMANCE_TIMING_BELT.pdf Here is the diagra...

My Gregories manual shows an engine with just 2 camshaft sprockets instead of 4, which threw me a little. Having 4 definately makes it more difficult. It says the installation is pretty much the reverse of the removal, except I have to prepare the tensioner in a press (seems a vice would to the same...

Help - Timing Belt
So I've replaced the water pump and now I'm stuck trying to get the timing belt back on. There must be a easy way of doing this but buggered if I can work it out. One problem I have is when I align the timing marks on the left camshaft sprockets there is a fair amount of back-pressure and any slight...
