Thanks for the good wishes Pezimm.
I'm expected to get a good few years indeed. Was so impressed by the old wagon that I couldn't go past the forester in the end. Light, powerful (by my standards), and I assume brimming with subaru toughness.

My new 99 Forester
Just upgraded; was 85 L-series touring Wagon (still have), and now a green 99 Forester. Flew to Sydney to buy / collect; did oil change; drove to Melbourne. Soon I'll head up to Lake Eyre, then do some roundabout wander back up to Darwin. The back end is obviously sagging, and seems to be lower on t...

mixture; L-series Dec85, ea82, carb
Do you drill through the top of the "mixture screw cap" to get at the mixture screw? Or can I pull it off if I pull the carby out (again)? There's a bigger story... basic amateur carby overhaul; now have backfiring in exhaust when changing gears up unless I'm very gentle. Played with timing and dist...

Got as far as "one of those micro blades" and a shiver went right through me... You're gonna have some high quality scars there! I was on a mine in Qld a few years back and on the safety notice board they had an alert about an incident that had happened somewhere - mostly a picture of a full face cl...

Any particular cautionary tale?

replace the rotor
Just for the record... While I think there were multiple issues, and the carbie probably would still benefit from a kit, the thing that sorted this out was an $8 rotor. The old one had gotten so flogged that it wasn't sitting tight, and was moving around about ? 20 or thirty degrees, sometimes holdi...

same loops
Just been doing the same loop - got the bearings from CBC no worries - around $75 each and set up more as a single part rather than dual bearings with a separate spacer. In the end I decided that I'd saved a bit of mechanic time by pulling the trailing arms out, but that the rest was too much of a s...

Thanks Guys, both much better options. And there's even a CBC here in Darwin. Perhaps more for anyone reading this later (but I'll still gratefully receive any advice): I've disconnected the trailing arm (suspension first, brakes also) and reckon that needed to be done. Knocked the pin out of the hu...

rear wheel bearings
Hello, my rear wheel bearings are on the way out... First, repco just quoted me 146 each for new ones! Any better ideas? Also, haven't done bearings before, so my first job is simply getting at them. Just pulling the brake plate off now, but it seems like I'll have to get the half axle out to get at...

Nolathane bushes? 85 L-series, trailing arms
Need to replace flogged out trailing arm bushes on my 85 L-series (it's had some adventures..). A reliable mate says that I should -not- use the Nolathane bushes as they are crap and don't last / up here 'round Darwin at any rate. Bit of research suggests that -maybe- the problem with Nolathane is h...

cheers Bennie
Thanks Bennie, Pleased to have found you guys. I put a kit through an old toyota carbie once, so I've some idea. Although I was hoping that wasn't going to be the answer (-: It'll be a while before I get near any way of getting a kit, so any ideas on what I might be able to check or do in the mean t...

fuel probs, tapping the carburetor, 85 L-series
Having problems with fuel supply and idle adjustment on 85 L-series wagon. I'm out bush, so especially keen to understand what's happening. The idle point moves all over - I'm constantly adjusting it. Sometimes I have loss of power and I have to do the routine of pulling the air filter off and tappi...
