Why not lose the weight and complexity of the gearbox altogether, go for a hydraulic pump mouted direct to the bellhousing, and mount hydraulic motors directly to the diff on the rear and wheels at the front? No heavy gearbox, cv shafts, gearshifts to modify, and it lets you locate the engine a tad ...

Well, I went and bought the bits from my local parts place..and the timing belt is teflon lined.....I'm a little confused as to why? So, I did a quick fix, installed the new seals to stop the leak and put the new idlers in....then a belt from a motor my mate rebuilt and ruined one week later. It's o...

Pulled the cam gears off, and oh look.... theres a seal, just sitting there on the end of the cam.
Sooo, its time for new cam seals, timing belt, idlers and while I'm at it, oil and filter.
Any suggestions on where to get quality parts for a decent price would be appreciated.

Looks like its a crank or cam seal, the timing belt is saturated in oil, and the car is leaking a steady stream of oil...
Apart from the usual issues with setting up the timing belt which I will replace, is there any info I may need to be aware of in regards to replacing crank/cam seals?

Oil leak! EJ 25 twin cam.....

Got to work today and when I stopped, smoke started pouring out from under the bonnet! Seems theres an oil leak somewhere on the front of my motor, appears to be drivers side...checked oil level...its down, but not dramatically so... Topped up oil before heading home....smoke every time I stopped. G...

I always pulled the standard phillips screws out and flung them, in favour of allen screws.
Much less likely to drop into the guts of the dissy, and easier to tighten/undo.

Personally, I'd avoid any type of sealant that has metal flakes in it, I've been there and destroyed and seized the water pump with that stuff.
Of course, it did mean the leak got fixed, as well as the timimg belts...

Still got my Grandad's set of gedore ring spanners, from 3/8 to 1 1/8, clipped into the metal box they came in.
They feel very heavy in comparison to modern spanners and sit so nicely in your hand, I can really lean on them hard, and not hurt my hands.

Wish they'd made a comparable metric set.

Never had an MY, well not since the 80's anyway...I had a succession of L wagons, and loved them all, the last one went for parts...
Love my Outback, even though it too, has it's quirks...or because of that?

I'm lucky enough to be able to borrow my works honda 4-stroke powered spitwater pressure cleaner. It'll spray gently enough to clean old fibreglass flyscreens without harming them, but when the motor is cranked up, it'll strip paint with ease. It does have one small issue, the knuckleheads at work h...

Good to see you're getting some use out of the old beast, I did a lot of k's in her, and it was better to see her go as a donor than be crushed for scrap.
