Going from about 70 hp to 135hp is a big difference. The transaxle has no problems, as they can handle up to 300hp if treated well. The torque curve of the EJ22 suits the VW 2 litre transaxle and the bus size very well.
17.8sec 1/4 mile at 75mph with a stock EJ22

I did an EJ22 rebuild. Nasty business
I have an EJ22 in a 1975 VW Bus. I put a 2H engine in back in about 2004. It lasted 4 years. I put another 2H engine in in 2008. It lasted 5 years. So I decided to rebuild this time. I had two Subaru remanufactured fully rebuilt heads . Genuine new Subaru valves etc. that I got off ebay for $200. Th...

EJ22 SOHC are there better cams available
I am in the position of rebuilding the EJ22 in our VW Bus, and I would like to put some better cams in it if possible, taking into account that I would like better torque over a wider range, and fuel economy is not a problem. If higher compression ratio will add a bit extra power, I am prepared to d...

Tried the local Pic -apart. They only had L series, no EJ engines. The Suby and Jap wreckers were the ones I rang to get the above prices, and they all seemed pretty much on par with each other. I just think that if I can save a few bucks, and someone else can get a few, and we are both happy, then ...

EJ22 motor wanted in Melbourne
I have a 1975 Volkswagen bus powered by EJ22 for many years, and finally this motor has problems. The conrod bearings have gone. I have had quotes for second hand motors for $660 from wreckers for EJ22, and $880 for EJ22 with new rocker gaskets and cam belt with 3 month warranty. I thought I would t...
