Just a follow up on this.

The hold light flashing was indeed a transmission error code.

It turns out its the solenoid for the rear diff clutch pack that drops it out on tight turns and is a really common problem.

Gotta love sleepers, especially when its unexpected. A guy here in town has an old 85 Bluebird with a turbo SR20 in it, catches alot of guard if you don't spot the intercooler. I used to have my bug as a sleeper but its now lowered with 17s, 4 wheel discs and sounds like a WRX so gives it away prett...

So for conversation reasons I suggest an EJ20 or 22 would be the go. If the 20 is more compact then I'd go that way. Google brings up a few people saying the hold light flashes to indicate an gearbox ECU error.

Its just a consistant flash, probably 2 per second, not like it's flashing a code.

Hold mode works fine but doesnt change the light flashing, didn't notice if it even had a power button.

I like the whole concept. I never received concrete info about economy prior to the conversion.
