Thank you for that. The ability to use Turbo units opens up more choices as there seems to be a lot more Turbo vehicles being wrecked :)

I guess the Outback is longer wheelbase so the shaft is longer. In that light, the WRX is probably shorter.

Thanks, the difference is in the front sections. The only issue is that my original shaft has UJ's near the centre bearing where as the used shaft from mr eBay has a ball joint looking thing, must be a newer model thing. I can see a bolt for the UJ section to the front bit, but not sure how the ball...

I bought a shaft off eBay from a guy in western Sydney. I picked it up on the way through & prior to that made him confirm that is was from a MANUAL forester, he said he had both but would give me the manual one. OK Then I remove my shaft and guess what, it is longer than the replacement. I then ask...

It is the tail shaft, the centre bearing is OK. The problem is the uni at the rear end. It is a crimped in type. I have ordered a replacement from the US that replaces the crimped in type, but that is going to take some time and I can get a tail shaft off a turbo for less than the cost of the uni, s...

I figure the dimensions such as length, diameter should be the same, where the difference may be "if any" might be in the number of splines in the ends. I know that some of the drive shafts to the wheels have spline differences on where they go into the diffs ?

Thanks

All good, I got a used unit off eBay, it went in OK.

I am getting to know the back end of my Forester very well. It is the 9th Subie and I never had to do a diff before.

Thanks.

One thing I have just remembered, the model of my Forester is a "Limited" (has the lettering on the rear hatch, nowhere else). I gather that would be based on other features like interior, etc, could it also indicate a "limited slip diff" ???

I had a look under the vehicle to see what the Diff ratio is, however there is no sticker on the diff where there usually is one (on my past L series wagons). Without the sticker, how does one work out or find the ratio ?

Forester 2000 2lt 5sp Diff types that fit ?

I need to replace the rear diff on our 2000 5sp 2lt Forester. To pick up a used unit I need to work out what sorts will fit. Is it only Forester units that work or will Imprezza, Outback diffs work as well ? Is there a difference between rear diffs on vehicles with auto or manual front drive units ?...

Need Rear Diff - 2000 Forester

A persistant rear noise has finally been located in the rear diff, after replacing both rear wheel bearings and repacking the drive shafts. I need a rear diff for our 2000 2lt Forester 5 speed manual. Just the rear diff, or with drive shafts, etc. Must be in very good condition ! I live in Cooma NSW...

Sorry for the slow responses, been away trekking in Nepal for a month. There is one EA81 and one EA82, the EA81 came out of our 1983 or 84 pre L series wagon. It is not complete had some bits removed like oil pump, water pump, though I have those bits loose somewhere. Dual range gearbox came out of ...

All done ! It was not as onerous as I first thought. I removed the hub and had the local mechanic press the old bearing out and put the new ones in. I was surprised to see that there were two braking systems in the rear, disks for braking, hub brakes for the parking brake. Why not just have disk par...

Forester - change rear wheel bearings in vehicel or remove hub ?

I just got the good and bad news from the loack mechanic today that the noise we had emminating from the back is wheel bearings, rather than teh diff that we though was on its way out. As he can not do it until next week, I will attempt to replace the bearings. As I am use to L Series this is a new ...

Saw the old car off yesterday, it is headed for the "shitbox rally", a charity event from Sydney to Perth in May, apparently it is going to be painted all over with daffodils :)

Lots of subies in it apparently.

Gave them some of the spares for the journey.
