If you want to fix the problem remove the rocker cover and at the end of the rocker shaft there should be a small orofice this usually blockes up and the air cant bleed out of the shaft and goes through the lifters you can go through heaps of lifters if you dont unblock the hole the noise will keep ...

The engine will run better and have more power if you run the engine with out the egr as it recycles exhaust gases back into the intake to lower the emissions .
