Digging deeper I have discovered a cable and software that works with a laptop running Windows. Evoscan total cost is about $97 including std air delivery. These combination covers early model Subaru Liberty with nine pin connection and Subaru Select. Link to cable page of web site: http://www.evosc...

I have done some more research and this list flags 1995 as OBD2 http://www.obdii.com/connector.html I note is says Legacy not Liberty as in Australia. Also Subaru has a nine pin connector and an adapter to OBD2 connector is available here. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320532...

OBD2 Connector on 1995 Liberty
The information I have found indicates that 1995 Liberty with auto does comply with OBD2. Looking at the OBD connector it has 14 pins instead of 16. ie pins 1 & 9 missing. Looking at pin assignment it appears that these pins are not needed. I would like to obtain one of the reasonably priced ODB2 sc...

1995 Liberty A/C failure
Having tested the pressure and temperature limit switches as OK. I checked out the control relays. The fan relay is energised when A/C button pressed but compressor relay is not. Measuring with a volt meter there is supply to the relay coil but no earth return. This earth return is there sometimes a...

If as I suspect the bearings are tapered the castellated nut must be adjusted so that the bearings run freely, even with a tiny end play. If the nut is tightened up hard the bearings will sieze and cause damage. This used to be standard practice, perhaps your bearings are different. I have seen many...

Discopotato03. Thanks for your inputs and experiences. I am not sure that you read my input on oil viscosity because I clearly mentioned the WINTER rating. Also I wonder about your input about the 15W recommendation for your EA82. This is not the operational number, it is related to freezing starts,...

El Freddo. Unfortunately it is very difficult to tell how oil is performing until it is too late.
Synthetics are far better, costing more but longer life between changes and saving your engine.
Take a read of this: http://www.performanceoilnews.com/oils_ ... oils.shtml

I have further researched to understand the oil rating system and read independant comparitive oil testing. Testing rates Mobil 1 as one of the best. In short term life testing the viscosity only thinned about 1%. Shell Ultra was one of five tested that had significant thinning, about 15%. The teste...

thanks discopotato03 for your useful info. I have in fact read all these and familiar with process. What I have been looking for is actual experience in operation. Rebuilders claim a lot and favour bronze liners , it is simple and low cost. It is very hard to find anybody quoting actual operational ...

Well I have searched and searched and found one mileage experience for bronze liners. Quote: You do not need hardened guides for unleaded fuel. Seats are a good idea but GM is still using the same old basic cast iron in their heads that has been around forever. The bronze liners are not a problem if...

It is my experince the sintered bronze bearings are only used in somewhat lower temp applications, many in fan motors. They are usually heated in oil to remove air and then allowed to cool and draw in oil. I cannot see them being applied to exhaust valve stems, too hot. Nobody has yet declared any e...

Are you sure about sintered bronze? There are no such claims from makers or rebuilders and any oil is going to get very hot at exhaust valve a likely to carbonise. Heat transfer is not only related to material but surface area. The sleeves I have seen have surface area substantially reduced due to m...

Bronze sleeves in valve guides
I am having an EJ 20 rebuilt and the rebuilder swears by bronze valve guide sleeves. With anything proposed as non standard I prefer to check out claims.
Attached is my evaluation
If anybody has experience with these sleeves I would be very interested.

Thanks guys. I found a handy link for Shell oils that you put in your make and model and get recommended oils and coolant. For my liberty 1995 the premium recommended is Helix Ultra 5 - 40. That is exactly what I have been using, good guess! link: http://www.shell.com.au/home/page/aus/products_servi...

Engine oil
I would be interest in comments on the right oil for EJ series engines. Have any problems been attributed to synthetic oils? What is the best SAE rating? 5 -40 or 15 -50, the later is recommended for worn engines. 10-40 is recommended in manual with a warning not to use 5 -30 for sustatined high spe...
