Cool, thanks for that. Not sure when I'll get it done but hopefully soonish. Is there any good way to tell whether it's the double offset or outer CV that is worn? I can't tell at the moment but both sides are noisy. I understand that the double offset joint can be renewed but the outer CV is part o...

After closer inspections today, and some help from another mate, it looks like the noise could well be CVs after all. I'm obviously hoping it is. I'm not sure whether it's inner or outer but both sides are noisy when under load. I reckon I'll need to remove the driveshafts and see if I can tell what...

Despite still being gutted about my noisy transmission, there is still some good news this week. The Brumby passed it's safety inspection and is now registered! Yay! As I said, the gearbox issue has detracted from the celebrations but it is still nice to be able to drive it and get a proper feel for...

Would the uni joints still cause noise in front wheel drive?

Ok guys A mate came round this morning and we both had a look at what's going on. The noise is only evident under load going forwards. Coasting, it seems to go away or at least go quieter than the engine. Still noisy in 4wd. Definitely sounds like it's coming from the gearbox, possibly left hand sid...

It definitely happened under load but I'm not sure if it was when coasting. I'd have to drive it again to check.
Sorry I don't have more definite details - it caught me off guard yesterday and I didn't really get much chance to mess about with it.

Cheers

I'd be lying if I said a 5 speed hadn't crossed my mind ;)
Gotta hope it won't come to that tho. I need this car on the road and my wife has been promised a new bathroom when it's done so if it's gonna be a big job to fix it, I might have to delay it a bit :(

Thanks for the replies so far. Just to clarify my original messy post: I can only hear the noise when the car is in a forward gear and moving. Bennie, I'll definitely check the console etc when I get the chance as there's not much else changed since it last drove OK. I did clean it underneath and I ...

Thanks for that. Sorry if it's a silly question but what would I be checking for with the linkage rods? Free play?
And would I still hear CV joints in neutral?
Good to know there are other things I can rule out before removing the gearbox.

I just fitted a Trufit moulded carpet in my Brumby. It was around $180 for front and back plus standard underfelt. I could have got a slightly cheaper one but they were out of stock so I paid a little extra for a better quality one. The fit is good. It was difficult to cut out all the holes and the ...

Brumby gearbox knocking EA81 D/R

Hi Guys Bad news today. I have a safety cert booked for next week but this afternoon I took the Brumby up the street and my gearbox has started knocking. It's not a really heavy knock and it only occurs in forward gears. It's almost like a worn CV joint sound but not as metallic. If I put the car in...

Well, it was all going well. A little too well. I got my new carpet in the post and fitted that along with the rest of the interior. I put the seats back in and even managed to sort out the driver seat not tilting. There was a dollar coin stuck in the mechanism! I put some brush on underbody under t...

Hi Guys Just an update on this, I decided to cut out the holes in the new rubber. Wasn't as hard as I thought as the rubber was really thin where the original holes were. I told the windscreen fitter about the holes and he only sealed around the top and sides so hopefully this will be OK. The guy ha...

We're getting closer... I now have a windscreen. It was a bit of a struggle for the guy to fit it but he got it in eventually. I'd bought a new (aftermarket) rubber off ebay and new rubbers are apparently difficult to work with. I was a bit unhappy with the chrome at the bottom afterwards - it wasn'...

I think you're right, Bennie, but my steering wheel just doesn't seem to connect with the tabs. I can see 2 little holes where it looks like it should engage but it's just not quite close enough. There is a spring on the white plastic collar which might be supposed to push it against the wheel and m...

To be honest, mate, I didn't drive it enough to remember before I took it apart so it may not have worked before but it looks like the white plastic bit should turn with the steering wheel and mine doesn't engage properly. I guess it's not the end of the world and I can always fix it down the line i...

Thanks guys It's all in now but I came unstuck on the last piece of the puzzle. When I went to refit the steering wheel, I tried the indicator cancelling mechanism but it didn't seem to be working. There is a white plastic collar with 2 pins which look like they should fit into 2 holes on the back o...

Saw an MY wagon for sale yesterday near Sarina, just South of Mackay, QLD. It was sitting in someone's front yard with $800 on the windscreen. Not sure of any other details.

Thanks for that, Steptoe. I was just having a last minute panic about the position of the loom. The dash lights seem to be OK - am I right in thinking there is only one Stop Lamp light and it comes on when there is a stop lamp not working? The cigar lighter is fine now I have put the panel in place,...
