He is unsure about how to do it but I have plenty of confidence in his ability.
He wants to try an easier part, probably behind passenger rear wheel monday after work just to get a feel for it.

alternator belt also drives the water pump so no you shouldn't drive it with out the belt.
Could you have tensioned it up to tight.
drive it noisy if you have to but if it goes quiet all of a sudden watch the temp guage and alternator light for any change. Then stop.

Well we got the alloy checkerplate floor fitted into the trailer. SO Wanda will get some lovin tomorrow. shouted myself a toolex blast pot. https://www.gasweld.com.au/products/592541 I am very impressed. and gave it a test run today, it seems to use less air for the same result as my little baster. ...

yer work always gets in the road of having fun.
My latest is putting a full 3mm alloy checkerplate floor in the trailer, might get that done over the weekend though.
