I would be looking at the linkages first and making sure the Selector rod is tight as it can make it difficult to get into gear. There is a pin that gets super sloppy and the fix is to put a bolt throw and a cut down the tube so you can tighten it up. And as for your other question any 4 speed from ...

Unfortunately most of the Subaru Parts for steering racks are no longer available both manual and power. As i have to go down the same track. (Already spoke to Frog aka Andy)

If it is a steal lift kit tak weld in a suitable spot to stop it moving or flexing. It should not effect the front camber and castor if installed correctly

I have a L series with a EA82 Auto in it (Not my car) that dies when you have it in drive and stop a reasonable rate. If you stop super slow it doesn't die but comes close. Is it ment to have an idle kick up solined or something?

Where can you get custom shafts made? I am running MY hubs and brakes with L Series Control Arms. The Outer CV is different between the pair, however a quick trip to the local Bearing Specialist with the hub and CV and just get the right size bearings to run the MY Shaft on the L Series Hub
