subies tend to have that hollow exhaust noise as they don't use cast iron exhaust manifolds to absorb any noise as most manufacturers do. you get similar sounds out of a 'normal' car when changing to extractors. chaff cutting noise may just be clagged out hydraulic lifters - almost normal then ! Li...

This car has had $4,000 spent on it in the last two years by the p.o. Last November it was overheating and diagnosed with a cracked head. He had both heads pulled and one replaced. At the same time the clutch and both driveshafts were replaced. Prior to that the water pump and the radiator were repl...

Is there a thermostat in it? I ran an EA81 once without a thermostat (not even a restrictor plate in its place) and it behaved exactly as you've said. It's all there, I replaced the thermostat as well but it is still doing it. The radiator is a 12 month old reco unit, water pump was replaced about ...

I just picked up another L wagon for next to nothing. The car has near new clutch, driveshafts, water pump and radiator. Last November the PO had overheating problems that ended up with him shelling out over a grand to have one replacement head fitted - original had cracked. The hassle being that th...

Alfa engines and Subaru
A mate of mine was trying to tell me that some Sube motors were developed from an Alfa design and that dropping a Sube motor into an Alfa (eg 33) is a comon conversion.
Is that right?

Thanks Steve, The crankcase pressure seems OK but there was oil in the air cleaner, however this was definitely due to a blocked PCV valve. The compression is now more or less normal in that cylinder follwing a smoking ceremony involving half a bottle of injector cleaner down the carb and filling the...

Looks like I didn't need an answer to this one. The pcv valve isn't working, the thing has been burning oild down the carb for who knows how long and the compression rings in one cylinder were gummed I think. I poured half a container of supercheap injector cleaner down the plug hole, replaced the p...

Just make double sure it's not something like the hoses or hose clips. This will require you to invert yourself under the dash with a torch while the engine is running. I had the stains and leak on one car recently but it stopped when I tightened the clamps in the engine bay and under the dash. If y...

More L problems
I have L wagons coming out of my backside at the moment and only one of them is healthy. One has stuffed compression rings on one piston, the other dud runs fine but is showing a bit of emulsion around the oil filler and the coolant has gone milky green. It doesn't bubble at all and the compression ...

Piston Rings on EA82

Looking at the Gregory's manual it looks conceivable that the piston could be removed without splitting the block...acc...

Re: Leaky windscreen
My L-series has started to leak from the right hand corner of the front windscreen. There is a touch of rust coming through at the top edge of the windscreen in the middle which is probably causing this. Is it likely to be anything else? Like the seal just not working anymore? Has anyone removed th...

If you have a 36mm socket for what I think you have it for, get a coupla half inch breaker bars - just in case. Many have broken 1/2 inchers Better still get a 3/4" breaker bar and ensure the 36er is a 3/4 " hole and then there is that certain size pin punch for cv shafts I ended up buying a whoppi...
