It seems that the noise is coming from the front right of the engine. I took that side of the timing belt cover off to find quite a bit of oil which also seems to be dripping onto the exhaust causing the smell. Could a leaking cam seal be related to the sound? If the a cam seal is leaking that bad,...

I would get that fuel system out of the engine bay.

That will not pass a safety certificate.

oh o. I drained the oil this afternoon to do the first oil change. After all the oil drained out I noticed a little metal ring sittin in the plug hole. Turns out its the g-shaped ring that sits in front of the piston pin! The one you remove via the access hole. How much trouble am I in? You're in a...

Every clutch would judged on it's own merit as to part failure etc, or owner driving habits/abuse etc.

If your injectors are on the airbox side of the throttle body, whether you have 1,2, or 20 injectors, it will still be equivalent to SPFI. It makes sense to me if you go this route with 2 injectors AND you have a mappable ECU to drive them. Whether you fire them sequentially or batchfire, will be im...

Valve clearances quiet = small valve clearance = good compression = crap power. A small clearance is still a clearance. Even 4 thou hot. A tight or riding valve gives low power AND a poor compression reading. Good compression does not equal crap power. Valve faces and valve seats wear, closing the ...

I think you will be "hit and miss" running one injector per head. MPFI (one injector per cylinder) or SPFI (one injector for the whole engine) are better options. SPFI, as far as the engine is concerned, is really an electronic carburettor supplying atomised fuel to be vaporised within the inlet man...

Sounds like you have burnt the clutch out.

Manner of operation, ie: slipping the clutch excessively while towing will bring on earlier failure in any clutch system.

I can't see Subaru giving warranty for a clutch.

Wear and tear item, just like brakes.

What is the difference between an EA71 and an EA81 piston?

Does the EA71 have a domed piston?

The EA81 engines I've had apart are ALL flattop pistons.

I have to disagree with HID conversions. If a headlamp reflector is DESIGNED for a H4 or H7 bulb then that is what should be fitted. Look at a H4 bulb. Why are the two filaments located at different lengths within the bulb? That's how we get a different spread of light from low to high beam with the...

Matt wrote:Yes been running ok before , just had Distributor wires go. I am now thinking slightly blocked filter.
A filter (fuel or air) won't cause idle issues BEFORE it causes lack of power.

Flow demand from the engine at idle is way less than any other point in the rpm band.

The silicone hoses are pretty much resistant to most things like petrol, oil, coolant and acids but tap water will eat right through them. Filtered water is even worse, it practically vaporizes silicone hose within seconds I find that very hard to believe. You're saying a cooling system hose set I ...

You can use GP paint thinners to clean the carby bits, its better than carb cleaner, easy to get and cheap, just dont put it on any plastic carbie bits or ice cube trays. Its a good idea to spread/stretch/oil the acc pump cup, before you put it in, it will last longer. Also worthwhile checking that...

Mechanic for 33 years, owned many Stanley sets, mainly because they grow legs, but I haven't broken one yet.

Screwdrivers are for screws.

I still have a centre punch I made at high school, teacher hit it with a 2lb sledge hammer as a test, just as good if not better as some name brands.

I'll bet your ECM code is for vehicle speed.
Common problem with lots of cars stalling on coast to a stop.

My 2002 WRX clock didn't work when I bought it 2 years ago.
All wiring tested ok, I replaced the clock with a new one from Subaru, about $150 from memory.

My Brumby analogue clock still keeps perfect time.

RSR 555 wrote:Isn't the Lift at TDC (of the lobe) .227" and .232" ?
No, that's maximum lift at the cam lobe.

Multiply those figures by the rocker ratio (1.5) to get theoretical valve lift.
Actual valve lift takes valve clearance into account.

Valve Lift at TDC would be about .025 - .030.

I've seen a few on Subaru, can't count how many on Holden.
