You still can drive it until the battery dies!!! (without A/C & P/S) Not good news eh..... (Good thing the water pump is run off from timing belt!)
Happened to me once and drive for 100kms without belts until home.

Smell needs to be identified, brakes, clutch, gearbox oil, engine oil and coolant has its own smell if something is going wrong. Is there any possibility an slow oil leak on the exhaust causing the smell? Do a test for the clutch - put in 5th gear and try drive it off - if it stalls then the clutch ...

I run into an ditch after driving exact the same car that had power steering and jumped in other car while cornering and I went in the ditch - why? no power steering.. oopsy! (as under estimated the weight of the steering!) thanks goodness no damage occurred.

The only one thing I can think of is the rear diff which is same housing as Forester! except the flange and the cover bolts.. That is all!

dual range section is inside the gearbox not transfer case - thats the centre diff in the rear of the gearbox.
