Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Ah well, today was an interesting day, but alas she's coming home on a tow truck tomorrow  Won't be driving it for a while. The short story: - fuel return line is definitely too small, need to change it to 6mm hard line or 8mm hose - throttle position sensor is definitely bad, with no input fr...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Dyno day got moved to Thursday now  The tuner had some excuse about moving house. So I moved my day off, re-scheduled the tow truck and have to wait one more day. This arvo after work I got 40L of 98 RON in jerry cans to put in (he wants a full tank for tuning) Plus another <10L I had in the s...

Re: Sister's Gen3 Liberty "Basil"

Nice work Bennie keeping an older Subie alive. These and the early 2000's Foresters etc are the models turning up in droves recently at wrecking yards near me. At the end of their useful life or just the cost of a few spare parts to fix was more than the car is worth :( High k's, a little rough roun...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

It's booked in for Wednesday 7th  I will hang around for the first hour or two to answer questions/fix problems. They said it could take all day so might not want to stay, but I'll be on on call to come back and fix any issues that come up. Hopefully they're OK with me filming a dyno pull on m...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Heh, yeah I just couldn't resist  After washing it, just looked too good to walk away from for the day. That's all the same bracket, just different stages of completion ;) I was hoping the guys that did the engine build could tune it, they're the premier high performance Subaru tuners in Adelai...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Progress today, she moves! I made the last bracket (I think) for this conversion project being the engine stay rod bracket. Just for fun(?) and being that I started later in the evening, I made this one entirely without power tools except a cordless drill, and the welder of course. I tell ya,...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

That solid state relay setup, just the relay died and not the pump? Got to be happy with that over a dead intank (expensive) fuel pump. Just the relay died. Being electronic/solid state it is a sensitive device and I forgot the diode to protect it. It was written in the installation guide, "Inducti...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I just can’t fathom how you’re having so many issues with original sensors/parts etc. I’ve had engines and parts sitting around for long periods of time and when put into use they haven’t had an issue. What you’re experiencing goes against what I’d expect of genuine Subaru used parts in general. Ha...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Yes, it can control the IACV with a single wire. I put on a bug-eye throttle body because it has the 3 wire IACV. Just power, ground and signal. The original TB had a 6 wire stepper motor IACV, which only the Elite 2500 and above can control (super big step up in size and $$$) I've ordered a new IAC...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Another 6 hours spent on it today, another day ended in frustration  This thread is turning into a blog but I need to vent I guess  Turns out the P/S lines weren't leaking, so I dunno where the puddle of oil came from that was under the car after the first start right below the P/S rack. ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

The support was great, part of the reason why I was happy to spend the money on this ECU to begin with. It's all 100% aussie made by car enthusiasts like us, there's guys in Sydney happy to help over the phone whenever needed. I can see why (nearly) every build on MCM and definitely every build on t...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

How does the Haltek know when to fire the other two cylinders? And are you sure you know which cylinders are firing? The ECU knows at all times where the engine position is by comparing crank and cam sensor readings, and fires the ignition outputs accordingly. I'm only using 2 ignition outputs (for...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Yep, I was right, the coil AND injectors were faulty. Cleaned out the injectors outside the car, so I could see them spray. All kinds of green/brown smelly gunk came out of them. Also with the drivers side rail off I could remove the pressure reg and flush out the system finally, brown varnish and s...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Heh I'm not taking orders Bumpty, this was way way too much work, never want to repeat it  Currently half way through day 2 of trying to get it to start. Battery is now flat so can't do any more for 10 hours at least. So much fun and games (not) so much troubleshooting  Too much to put int...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I’d be working out which port on the EFI pump is the return and plumb your return line from the engine to this. The return port will typically drop fuel straight into the fuel pickup bucket that stops the pump from sucking air when low on fuel in a corner. You are right the MRA return line does dro...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Franken-tank is complete  The internal sealer is on nice and thick (this was a long, laborious and exhausting process, my back and arm muscles are still sore from turning and shaking that thing!) Today I stripped off the paint and rust on the top half and re-painted it. Also made some lowering...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

The fuel tank is back together  Got it done yesterday, shed party with my boss and a bloke I met through work who was keen to help. He was determined that I should TIG weld it but I didn't think it was possible (because shitty grade, paper thin metal) so he offered to do it, and I watched. ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Some pics of todays effort  Really happy with how this has turned out. Much easier than cutting the floor up! All that's left to do is replace some rusty patches in the rest of the top half with some new metal, seal the area around the welding, then join the two halves :o  https://i.i...

Re: Red Targa Brumby

Saw that cameo on this weeks vid, was wondering if you'd be in it  That's quite a list for sure, nothing that's outside of your abilites though ;) Would be an awesome cruise up, compare the same journey between the current donk and EJ AWD. Surely we could get a few MYs to turn up at the sam...
