The main thing is the cable is cheap/free for most people, and this program is free. More to the point it wasn't designed to work with USB.
You could get other software to work via USB, but you might need to pay for it.

On my 90 liberty I should be able to switch brakes/backing plates with the larger items from a 2.5 outback 98ish model?

well considering my old lifted L was a liberty in a lifted L series body, this should go alright. and i've got the vortex with the same running gear, you could say i like ej22's. and bennie my old L cost $1250 and then i sunk some money into it, plus rego. this was $50 more with rego just needs lift...

Old laptops are only about $50 on gumtree if that, doesn't even need a hard drive because your booting from a USB. yeah a desktop would work, but you could never drive it while hooked up. which might be needed some times.

i took it to a car i was looking at tonight, 3 stored codes!(crank/cam sensor and purge) cleared them and only one came back up "PURGE".

its actually a video bennie, click it and have a look :)

i have un pluged the tps and it will hold revs but not the iacv, i have however tryed removing the iacv solenoid but leaving it conected to the loom. holding the iacv shut with no change from memory.

i'll have another look on the weekend

ok, well i fired it up with the scan tool connected again to day. it starts fine and idles nicely untill you bring the revs up and hold them constant anywhere above 2000rpm. the the idle air control valve shows a fault and on releseing the pedal it drops to normal idle and the fault code goes out. a...

He didn't use an adapter, he combined a ej and ea box. Front ej to bolt up and rear ea to retain pt4wd
