Which part gives way, and was it in low range?

Yeah I don't wear it to work as its too risky, I'm a service tech on woodworking machines and i work on mechanicals and electronics, i've heard horror stories about the rings! Cheers AP A guy at work somehow bumped the MIG against his ring while he was welding something, you should have seen the bu...

The only bearing I replaced was the one on the input shaft, only because I couldn't be bothered getting the old one pressed off the shaft. I probably should have replaced the needle bearings as well, but never actually did.

ps. You may want to clear out some pm's - your inbox is full!

G'day, Upto now, I called it a day from what I noticed and learnt tonight, Is that you cant "just swap" the cogs over as they're both in different sizes.... question is can both dual range section be swapped over without disassembling whole shaft to suit... (shown in red box below) If you remove th...

Removing door trims

Does anyone know the secret to removing a door trim in an MY08 Outback/Liberty? I tried to remove the trim from around the opener lever but that just snapped one of the clips, and the middle part with the handle and the window controls I have no idea about.

RX Turbo - It's got a Forrester AWD box and viscus rear LSD. The centre diff is so stiff I can hardly even turn it with a breaker bar. The rear diff is stiff even when cold, if it was an open diff there would be something seriously jammed up. I did have another VLSD here that acted like an open diff...

My RX has a viscus LSD from a WRX, if you jack just one wheel of the ground and try and turn it it is reasonably hard to do so, not as much as a clutch pack though.

That sounds bad. The low range is in the same section as the rest of the gearset so uses the same oil. It shouldn't have got stuck in low, so something's not right.

Hmmm... I've changed the uni joints on an MY shaft before so maybe it's time to convert to a 1 piece shaft.

L series tailshafts

Is it possible to fix these? I've got one with a loose uni joint and a dodgy bearing that will soon need replacing.

Mine is missing torque as well. It's a pain because the auto wants to keep changing down gears, but when it does that the thing just flies so it changes up again.... If it wasn't under warranty I'd find a way to give it some turbo treatment. Having said that when you actually want to drive at 6000rp...

If you've got the same sized wheels on your car as the car that the gearbox came from it should be fine. On my RX it's within 1-2%

Video from Stockton Beach

A few weeks ago I took my Outback 3.0R to Stockton Beach for the first time. It goes fantastic on the sand, one of the better cars we had there. The only problem is overhang, I ended up ripping off half the rear bumper later in the day. oops! It only came dislodged from the metal clip so I can fix i...

I've been experimenting with fuels in my new 6cyl outback and surprisingly there is no noticable difference between 95ron ethanol and premium. Running Newcastle to Sydney on premium I got 9.2l/100km, ethanol was 9.0. Running Sydney to Newcastle on ethanol I got 8.6. Since it's only done 3000km I thi...
