The hill holder, (if adjusted properly) will work when the vehicle is facing uphill at about 3% grade or more. The clutch holds the pressure in one half of the braking system so that when you release the brake but keep the clutch pedal in then the brakes will stay on, which allows you to do a hill-s...

So if it's a SOHC how can the valves hit each other if a timing belt breaks?

I think you'll find GL and RX models had fuel lights and the DLs didn't/ This may have varied throughout the model life though. I had a GL that had one, and a DL that didn't. Most won't work now because they are so old, the send dies and it's very expensive to replace. There are either two or three ...

Outback will be the better towing vehicle, assuming that Forester is only a 2.0L.

I wasn't too sure about the wiki article on the EJ motors, just seems very US-centric. I'm pretty sure that at some stages and models we were getting different motors etc. in Aus delivered vehicles.

I rang Subaru and am told that my SOHC model is an interference motor, that they initially thought that they were non interference, but they've had 2 come in that proved not to be. Ouch. Based on that they say they have to assume that they are an interference motor.

Interference Motors?

Just wanted some info on what Subaru engine are interference types. ie; when the timing belt breaks the valves will hit the pistons.

I know the EA82 isn't.

I'd specifically like to know which EJ25s are, for example, whichever one comes in a 2002 RX Liberty...

One thing I have read and heard of consistently abt subys is that they need fresh oil kept up to them, so ask for the service history and look for oil changes at 5000km or not much more. 5000km for turbos perhaps but 10-12,500km oil changes are fine for non-turbos. As long as they are regular. I've...

LOL, the Liberty wagon one. I only own that and the Silver Outback currently.

I'm actually leaning towards think it's engine oil - no real diff oil smell - but not 100%. Conceivably it could be both.

First of all, what model Subaru RS is it? Can I assume an Impreza RS? I owned a 2004 (MY05) model Impreza RS until last week. I've not come across the groan you speak of on 3rd to 2nd downshift, can you be more specific about the actual noise. A normal downshift (ie not at high revs) should be quiet...

Oh where, oh where is this oil coming from?

So if I appear to have oil in / leaking from the bellhousing / bit between engine and gearbox thingy - where would that becoming from. Must it be engine oil or could it be gearbox oil? And whichever, where would it be coming from? Is there a seal around the gearbox input shaft? Also, the axle-stub/d...
