Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I silver-soldered the ends onto my power steering hard line today, pretty happy with the result! The original MY hose screws straight onto the back of it. Just need to extend the return hose to meet the new reservoir.

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

You're right Bennie, it should be a no brainer ;) Will go with the tank-modding option, it's far easier and I've got it apart anyway. I'll sink that corner of the tank down 20mm or so, and maybe I can bring the tank down another few mm towards the diff to give me the space. I'd rather not take 20mm ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

The fun and games continue, and solving one problem creates 5 others! :o Got the sides of the bottom half to line up with the top half today, a fair bit of work involved. Then took to the top half with a grinder and cut a gaping hole for the commodore pump/reservoir assembly. Which raises a big prob...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Todays effort, tackling the last big headache head-on. I'm either on the way to making 1 good larger tank or have just completely destroyed 2 perfectly good tanks :mmm: Was happy to see my original tank was pristine inside, looked like new almost. Same can't be said for the donor tank...the zinc gal...

Finished them up today, they look the goods apart from the scratched bit because I couldn't wait for the paint to dry

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Well I got a big hurdle out of the way (mostly) today, sorted out the location for the power steering reservoir! That was one of the last 2 remaining big headaches, the other being the fuel tank (which is also in hand, next week ;) ) It's the reservoir out of a 2014 Liberty/Outback I think it was, w...

Good stuff Bantum, watching with interest.

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Well I slept on the thought and decided to go back this morning for that fuel tank, when am I ever going to find another 45L just like mine? It was a mammoth effort to get it out, that thing is so unbelievably rusty and everything is seized solid. Ended up leaving to buy a reciprocating saw and came...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Heh, yeah that's my cranking and recreation battery, 40 usable lithium amp hours in the main storage and, if I accidentally run it flat there's a 10ah backup storage to get the car started. Worth the money I think, I can run my fridge for 2 days no problems at all and without a dual battery setup. T...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

A little update to let you know I haven't died but progress is slow  Have been trying to keep myself busy with little odds and ends, mainly wiring. The exhaust Y pipe I ordered got put on backorder for nearly 2 months, they updated the product page with that information the day after I bought i...

Re: Whoops - 1985 MY wagon addition!

Top effort Bennie ;) Funny how we all end up fiddling with the same issues on these cars. Those exhaust spacers look like a pain, I'm thankful for never having had them on any of my cars. And those threads in the head for the exhaust studs seem to strip for everyone. If your helicoiled thread fails ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

That's a cool story Spanner, cheers  If I had space to keep a donor car next to the project car I might have been tempted to use the factory ECU and cut down wiring. I honestly believe the route I've taken with the custom ECU is the easier option, for me anyway. Not everyone is happy to do wir...

This is excellent 8-) I wonder how many Brumbys are left in Finland? Not many I would bet. I admire your determination with this project.

Re: Mighty Car Mods latest build AUG23!

They did an excellent job, really. The finished product looks pretty mint, and I like the low key decals down the side as a bit of a nod to the past. Think they said time frame was something like 6 months, understandable why they didn't get all of the choicest touring wagon bits like a/c, power wind...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

What heater tap do you have in there and is that why the top pipe was modified (going by the look of it)? Cheers Bennie Believe it or not, it's the heater tap from a London taxi  Available brand new, that's why I got it. It is completely wrong from standard though, have to modify the top and b...

Solution to making the analog tacho dash temp gauge read correctly. Using the original sending unit in the heater hose. With a sneak-peak at my new heater tap solution, a work in progress.

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Is it possible/or better to heat and bend the spanner instead of cutting & welding? Quite possibly, I've got a MAP gas torch that should get hot enough I'll give it a go. If it doesn't work then welding is a good backup ;) Ah Righto, that makes more sense. I didn’t realise the earlier wagons had a ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I can’t work out why you didn’t use the passenger’s grommet under the wiper motor. The same reason I'm fighting a lot of uphill battles with this engine swap in this particular car; it's a 1981 model! :mmm: I know in other utes and later wagons the passenger side grommet almost/is the same size as ...
