Go for an ej205 or ej207. Most of the 207's from 2000 onwards have variable valve timing. A aus spec ej205 wrx will have it from the peanut wrx onwards (2003??). Keen to know this. My Hitachi has been rebuilt ~2 years ago. Running massive ignition timing.. no wonder the brum keeps up with an ej25 outback..

Be prepared for a new box. Probably the transfer case bearings or input shaft or 5th gear bearing thats at fault. Common with age.

I'm part way through wiring up a late model leone 2wd cluster in my brum. Atleast then I'll have a fairly factory looking tacho.

What kind of grinding noise? Does it do it in all gears or just 1? You could use a 99-08 Outback manual box as they have the same 4.11 front diff ratio and bolt in. Or a 97-08 foz bix will work. Most of the impreza or lib boxes run different final drive ratios.. I did the same thing with a 2003 2.5l...

Good luck getting one. Ive been trying for the past 6 months to grt one at a reasonable price. If money isn't tight then you'll have no worries.
