That spreadsheet is every dollar i've spent on the car. I've thought of one more thing to add to the list in post #17 above: make an engine stay rod (you might get by without one, but the engine will clunk around when off road). That should be it for my conversion (i.e. 1996 EJ18 into 1993 carbie 5 ...

-I bought an adapter plate to bolt the new engine up to the old gearbox. These are simple enough to make, but I'm not keen on metal fabrication so just paid the money for it. -Stripped down the wiring loom myself (reducing it to just the functions required to run the engine). Some people pay a spark...

Nah, mine's a naturally aspirated fuel injected SOHC 16v 1.8L out of a 1996 Impreza. It makes about 20% more power than the original engine. Turbos are much more powerful, and much more expensive. And in response to your other post: I don't think MY stands for anything. It's just a model designation...

What Bennie said. I've just completed an EJ18 conversion for $1562.83. That's using a second hand engine, loom and computer from a bloke on this forum, all other associated parts are new, and I did all the work myself except for some wiring. Some of the other guys here have done EJ22s for similar mo...

The work on my car cost $330, but it was probably a fair bit simpler than yours. Definitely take it to a sparky, and preferably one that specialises in injection and ECUs etc. I know Deerings outsource their tricky jobs to EFI Autos. (I have no connection to them, but they served me well, so I'm hap...

When I ran out of ideas to get my EJ18 conversion running, I took it to EFI Automotives in Balcatta. Cameron there did the job, seemed to know his stuff, and got it running without costing me a fortune. Or there are companies like Injectronics which offer exchange ECUs, or can test the one you have....

A bit of an update: Removed the lift pump, so fuel is coming out of the tank through the standard filter to the HP pump, and she goes! http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n373/dhayden78/L%20series%20EJ18%20conversion/th_20081109_001.jpg It took a few jump starts before working out the alternator need...

It's definitely a worthwhile pursuit - more power, greater reliability, and often at similar cost to getting a reconditioned EA82. All Subarus from about 1989 onwards have had some sort of EJ engine. There are 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5L non-turbo engines from Imprezas and Liberty/Legacys. Or if you...

You don't really need to know what each wire is. This is basically what I did: 1. strip off all the conduit, tape etc so you can see everything, and trace all wires coming out of the ecu plugs - any that aren't going to engine plugs, ignitor, AFM or EGO sensors can be cut off (i left a generous leng...

I couldn't find any wiring diagrams to exactly match my EJ18, so I worked most of it out from these.

Hot fuel will cause cavitation in the pump, which will be noisy and ultimately damage the pump. I imagine it would also reduce pressure at the injectors which would prevent their proper operation (->lean mixtures?) Anyone know the average flow rate of a Bosch 044? Just curious for a quantitative ide...

You only need a small pump to keep the surge tank full. There's absolutely no point pumping ~200kPa into a reservoir. If your car had an electric fuel pump with the original engine, that will do it. Otherwise go to any parts shop and ask for a fuel pump to suit a carbied engine. Should only be aroun...
