Thanks El Freddo for the quick reply. Is there a way to get the electric fans to come on earlier instead of 3/4 hot, or is 3/4 hot an OK time for them to come on? I didn't realise that the new electric fan just plugged in with the existing fan, I thought it'd come off the a/c circuit somewhere separ...

The low/unstable idle is an intermittent problem. I'd rather exhaust all other options electrically before increasing the normal idle speed. But thanks very much for your assistance.

Hi all, Thanks for the responses so far. My car is in the shop today having some other work done on it so I will check things out when I can. In case it is related, I should probably mention the other idle trouble I've been having. Sometimes the car vibrates a lot and jumps around at idle (very unst...

Thank you very much to everybody for their replies so far to this thread - knowing what was involved has made progress to this point much easier. I now have an a/c system from a donor car belonging to a very generous friend of mine whose assistance was invaluable. Now that I have the gear I am mulli...

'89 Brumby dim lights/low power at idle

Hi all, I have recently inherited an '89 Brumby with a few behaviours I would like to remedy. When the car is at idle revs, the dash lights dim, the blower fan slows down and the headlights dip noticeably. When the indicators are on the dash lights pulse with them. My interior light sometimes has a ...

Are you sure your EGR solenoid itself is working correctly? I have a carby EA81 but my EGR valve got stuck open and caused a lot of damage to the carby and stuffed my spark plugs. It also caused the exact same behaviour you describe - I was doing battle to get off from a stop because the car would b...

JB Hi Fi did a custom install for me and left the tray underneath as well. I'm ecstatic with the quality of the installation, the only thing was I had to chase them up a few times in the booking process.

Is there any complication with fast idle/the carburettor or is that not required?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'd forgotten about the double pulley - that might be a problem.

Retrofit a/c

Hi all,

What would be involved to retrofit a/c into a 1989 Brumby? What might it cost? How bad would the reduction in performance be?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks very much. I have always used premium fuel especially to stay away from the ethanol blends you get with regular petrol, also for the higher octane. I put BP Ultimate in my car once but I seemed to lose a lot of power out of the engine so went back to the usual 95ULP. It would seem I am misinf...

Recommend oil please EA81 Brumby

Hi all, I own an '89 EA81 Subaru Brumby with extremely low kms, approaching 18500 now (11800 when I got it this year). It's not for sale! My mechanic is using Pennzoil engine oil (not sure what viscosity), which I am led to believe is causing my engine to ping. My service documents show that the dea...

I also own an '89 Brumby which heats right up to 3/4 before the fan kicks in and brings it back slightly. From my observations it only happens in stop-start situations where you are slipping the clutch to take off. Once you get back to something like 60km/h mine will drop back below half almost stra...

I also had my eyes on the alternator. The EA81 alternator is much smaller than that.
