the drain maybe there to drain the water from the window seal area, if you block it the water may build up and rust the Apillar.
maybe where the water runs the underside of the panel, you could put a line of silicone to make the water drop instead of run

from what i read they are not an interferance engine, so the valves cant hit the pistons unlike the twin cammers.
need more info on the noise, front, rear, one side, both sides, maybe a spanner in the fan?

normally remove covers around column, and the anti theft screws to turn them use a centre punch and chase them around.
if you not going far maybe lower column off the mounts, unplug wiring and spin whole column round and round.

maybe lucky and get them out undercar. i normall use wide vice on bench with a selection of sockets. that said, the sisters sigma ones got punched into orbit through the tin roof with a 100t press, they were pretty tight! park car on car ramps at rear and you can pull tailshaft without dropping oil,...
