Who's taken thier suby up north?
Who's taken thier suby up north?
Thinking about doing the whole up the cape trip in May/June sometime. Would be travelling in a group (4-5) cars. They mainly have lifted patrols/cruisers etc. so some offroad tracks would definety be taken.
Thinking about taking the Brumby along.
My Brumby specs are 2 in lift, springs, 27" nankangs, EJ20T Auto 4.444lsd
Has anyone been up there recently or know if the Suby would make it?

You'll be fine...
Up in weipa at the moment in a my 84 stock ea81 with a 3" lift and smaller tyres (than you).
The only thing that will stop you is deep water and that time of year is the dry so it will be less of an issue.
I will be doing a trip about then to the cape (200km away)
Pack a snatch strap and try not to get a dose of 'small car syndrome' and you should be fine.
Also travel between two of your mates so if you get stuck you can go forward or backwards.
Good luck

The Wonder Brumby has been there prior to me adopting her.
Log books showed no dramas encountered along the way.
27" BFG all terrains and 3" lift (EA81 at the time).
Go for it.

EJ22 Dual range AWD lifted, widened and much happier now thanks very much.
1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

Yes i am seriously thinking about taking it up. Although my mates always like to take the 'extreme' route. If i do take it up would be doing a couple of improvements.
ie have a decent air cleaner setup. one which includes a snorkel and a inclosed filter, rather than just a pod.
Would also like to change my 2'' lift at the front to a 3'' to level her out.
Maybe even a secondary fuel tank. Who knows?
Any suggestions?

I took my unlifted L sedan to Weipa when I worked there 10 years ago, & then went back on a trip with the QLD suba club.
I'd recommend fitting some older stock springs so that they soak up the corrugations. You can't believe how bad they are till you've tried to drive on them for 10 hours.
Don't fit twin shocks as the corrugations will cause the brackets to break.
14" wheels with an open treaded tyre (not necessarily 4wd tyres) as its very gravelly/sandy.
I'd just take a jerry can for fuel & take at least 2 spares (more if you can fit them, as tyres are difficult to get)

for a cape york trip, what max range fuel do you need to prep for? Eg 1200km?
keep in mind sometimes can be good budget wise to skip some inbetween fuel stops cause they may be extra pricey...
as to yah friends "Friends have been trying to convince me not to take it."
what would tehy know about subes......

Once you get north of Cairns, all the prices go up dramatically.
I've got no idea what it'd be worth now, but it was close to $1/L in 98.
Weipa will be the cheapest as they get bulk brought in from the boat (straight from Singapore in 1998 - 102octane leaded worked brilliantly in my carb L
). The rest of the places are trucked.
