expensive caliper rebuild kits for L Series ???

Post by hughybabes » Mon Sep 21, 2009 1:29 pm

The dust seals on one of the disc brake calipers of my L series wagon is badly torn. Took both calipers down to local ABS branch. He was getting prices of about $1000 for a complete rebuild kit. I couldn't believe it; neither could he. He reckons it might be because of the associated hand brake cam. Nothing seems wrong with that anyway. A kit to do just the piston seal and dust seal costs about $200.
Has anyone had any experience in this area ??

I have just done the front on my brumby which is not much difference. The seal kit is about $14.00 for each wheel. With that will come the square profiled "O" ring that seals the piston, the small "O" ring that sits on the shaft that comes out through the back and works the piston from the handbrake mechanism and the dust cover that sits around the piston face as you look at the piston head on.

It is not a big job and the gregory manual shows an exploded view and describes it fairly well. There are also tutorial videos on You Tube of the procedure so that you can get an idea and any tips.

Biggest problem was reinstalling the handbrake mechanism which the manual says you need a spring compressor for but it can be done in your shed with a bit of perseverence.

I just washed everything thoroughly and bought a tube of rubber grease for the job.

O ring kits were bought from Brake shop and arrived here in Toowoomba next day.

Ring me on 07 46968781 at night and I'll have a yarn to you about it if you like. The prices that are being given to you sound ridiculous. (Trevor)

I was quoted $150 each to have my Brumby callipers overhauled by a brake joint last year. I kept up with the noise that came after fitting new Bosch pads. My previous set same brand different grade lasted forever. These were quick stop and sort of made a binding noise sometimes. $1000 bucks and you could go the 5 stud EJ type brake upgrade! Or buy another L wagon maybe!

to stop the noise just give the sides of the brake pad a hit with a grinder at about 45 dc and tack about 0.5mm and all your noise will go .

The ABS guy reckons there are so many similar mistakes in the computer catalogue its not funny. He checked around and got back to me with some prices........
Result is, I have a reco'd set of calipers. Kit for both $170, total labour $50........ And they are nicely sand blasted ready for a groovy high temp paint job. I AM AN AGING/OLD HOON !!!
