Outback Gen 3 H6 fuel economy

Post by AlpineRaven » Fri Jan 01, 2010 1:32 am

G'day,
Tomorrow (Saturday) myself and my wife is going to Bendigo to have a look at this MY03 Outback with 155,000kms on the clock.

I wanna know what the good figure for fuel economy with automatic EZ30 (H6) compared to EJ22 & EJ25?

Thanks
Cheers

I've done a few runs from Perth to Kal in one - averaged 9.8L/100km. That's lightly loaded, air con sometimes, mostly flat ground with the cruise on 115ish km/h. Didn't closely measure consumption in town, but around 12L/100km. That car is probably due for oxygen sensors (the one you're looking at would be too), so there's potential for improvement.

And remember they're meant to have 95+ RON fuel, but I didn't notice any appreciable difference with regular 91.

If the one you're looking at has the dual sunroof, make sure both open, because they can be exxy to repair. That's about all I can think of apart from normal used car stuff. Nice cars.

I've got a Gen4 (2008 ) so it might be a little different, but for me good on the highway is 9.2 - 9.8, around town is 10.5 - 12.0. That's with 95ron Ethanol fuel, using the expensive stuff reduces the town figure to 9.5 - 11 or so. I should also add that's using sports mode.

The Gen3 EJ252 only makes 115kw
The Gen3 H6's have the EZ30D which has only one exhaust port in each head and has the alloy intake manifold and makes only about 160kw
The Gen4 EZ30R has individual exhaust ports, a composite plastic intake manifold, has AVCS and drive by wire and makes 180Kw

Fuel economy will be worse than the EJ25, but there is an 45kw more so the choice is yours.

The reason I want H6 is for towing reasons...
We're planning on getting a caravan and travel as much we can, but at this stage I'm thinking ahead about getting H6 that is why.

I have a 2006 H6 Outback and love it.

It gets 9.2 / 100 on average on the hwy, 10.2 / 100 aroudn town.. according to the trip computer over the 22 000 km I have done in it (since we got it) it has averaged 10.1 / 100km. I do a bit of towing so it just shows it evens out in the long run.

BUT when I tow the car trailer ( around 1700kg loaded) it gets 16/100. That being said it towes very nice and I am happy to pay the extra. It got 17/ 100km coming back from Harvey Bay with an RX Turbo on the back.

I would not touch the EJ 25 with the crap 4 speed Auto, the H6 and 5 speed is much nicer to drive

Just came back from Bendigo, something fishy going on!
ODO does not match with body work & seats/floors/carpet, didnt have service history as "lost the manual" and lots of under body damage...
Its sad as it sounds like a good car + good buy. He wanted 14 grand for it. (dropped from $15500)

The hunt continues... (not in hurry)

Was that at the local subaru dealership AP? I'd be keen to check it out as I've got a mate who works there... I wouldn't think they'd be pulling something dodgy - at least I haven't known them to.

As always, the right one will pop up at the right time :D
