EZ30R Off Road Forester.

Post by jzk25 » Tue Apr 13, 2010 6:34 pm

Recently finished this conversion on an offroad oriented SF Foz. We'd previously converted it from 2.0l auto to 2.5l manual and it was used and abused for a couple of years until the radiator split and the engine was destroyed. The owner was keen for a H6 conversion.

We originally ordered an EZ30D halfcut from sku81 but it missed the boat and he instead had a gen 4 EZ30R so we went with that. I attempted to get the factory ecu running the engine on the ground but the lack of CAN communication with other systems shut down the electronic throttle control so it wasn't usable.
Here's the setup on the floor.

Image

We then decided to use a Vipec V88 instead. We'd already used one on another EZ30R conversion and they are an impressive ecu. Because I had already stripped the engine wiring out of the main loom I got a plug and pin set for the Vipec instead of a flying loom and reterminated the factory loom to suit the V88. Throttle body is AU falcon to replace the DBW as it bolts straight on and has built in 2 wire PWM idle motor that owrks great with the Vipec.
The ecu was mounted in the glovebox because there have been previous drownings of ecu's in offroad excursions. I used a genuine Motec mounting kit for the ecu.

I made a new exhaust for the car also to both quieten it and gain ground clearance. It turned out to be the best sounding H6 I have heard.

very nice job mate, I like what you have done with the exhaust putting the exit out the bottom of the rear bar, I like it.

The hole car liiks good, hope you have some good trips in it now after all that hard work you have put in.

Oh I will.........

Lovin it Al. Obviously still needs the tune. Got it booked for a bash guard... right back to cover the O2 sensors and gearbox. Has a bit of poke to say the least. And smooth... talk about smooth... 1st with the Scorpion Low is trippy....

Can't rave about Al's work enough people ;)

nice work there, did you use the transmission that was attached to it or mate it to the forester one?

The box is 03SG forester gears inside a 99SF case with scorpion low range gears. The SG case suffered some damage from a circlip failure so I replaced the case. The SG gearing is spot on for the H6 for road use, maybe a little high geared for offroad though but Scott can be the judge of that. Clutch is an Exedy FJK7005HD.

This car has got me excited about EZ30's again, fkn great engine. The Vipec(rebadged Link) ecu is also brilliant, you would not know it isn't a factory ecu.

awesome Al. thats the best offroad exhaust I have seen. I asked the exhaust shop to tuck mine up high and they didnt get half the clearance you have.

SKT: got a video of the engine note?

The word on the street is that Vipecs are really good and make the idle and low speed stuff better than factory if tuned properly .

Not a cheap exercise so someone really likes their Subie .

Cheers A .

The car is going in for a tune in the next week or so. I will ask for a before and after print out of the output. I am interested to see exactly where in the range he can put the ponys for me....

I will get some vid of the note... Prob screamin down a dune ;)

Either way I'll get somethin up soon.... The bash plate gets customed up on monday so once that is done I'll get some pics of that up too... Prob lost abotu an inch with the crazy arse headers.... Ah well... I'll just have to wheel stand everywhere

Love it. Definitely some advantages in taking a foz off-road, like off the shell front and rear bars. Some more pictures of that exhaust would be great, something to shop the local shops how to do it next time i ask!

I've gone with raised Kings.

As a matter of fact. I've got a slightly stiffer pair of rears in my shed that would fit your car for sale. Brand new in the plastic with reciept.... I got a stock number of an owner of a later model Foz only to find out they wont fit mine. I'm pretty keen to move them on if you wanna PM me and talk $$$.... All you'd have to do is get the fronts and roll it into your local suspension mob and in under a few hours you'd have a spring lift. Its a good start without going the whole strut and body lift.
