OBD2 Connector on 1995 Liberty

Post by davmax » Tue Aug 03, 2010 8:41 pm

The information I have found indicates that 1995 Liberty with auto does comply with OBD2.

Looking at the OBD connector it has 14 pins instead of 16. ie pins 1 & 9 missing. Looking at pin assignment it appears that these pins are not needed.

I would like to obtain one of the reasonably priced ODB2 scanners now available.

I hope that somebody has already investigated or tried this option of using a standard scanner on a Liberty with the 14 pins.

What results were achieved?

Are there any problems to watch out for?

Not sure myself but if you could get the pin-out diagrams on both models then check that they all have the same voltage to each then I'd look at changing the early plug over to the later type.

Would be good if they were the same to just make a crossover connector :)

In Australia, non turbo Subaru's didnt get OBD2 till Gen4

Your car has SSM (subaru select monitor) which only works with subaru readers (or a home made scanning device using a serial adaptor and freeware software)
Current rides: 2016 Mitsubishi Triton GLS & 2004 Forester X
Ongoing Project/Toy: 1987 RX Turbo EA82T, Speeduino ECU, Coil-pack ignition, 440cc Injectors, KONI adjustale front struts, Hybrid L Series/ Liberty AWD 5sp
Past rides: 92 L series turbo converted wagon, 83 Leone GL Sedan, 2004 Liberty GT Sedan & 2001 Outback

So are you saying that obd2 will not work on my 2000 gen 3 outback h6. I was going to buy one of these readers and the info on ebay seems to say that it will work?

Can somebody confirm before I waste my money.

As above, your car doesnt support OBD2

I sell data cables for older models if you are interested.

I've definitely seen an OBD2 ScanGauge working on a 2002 Gen 3 Outback H6, and I'm 90% sure there's a 2000 model H6 in the club with one too.

I bought a OBD2 scanner for my 01 Outback and couldnt get it to work, and i had partial success on a 07 Forester. Maybe it was just my scanner

I have done some more research and this list flags 1995 as OBD2 http://www.obdii.com/connector.html I note is says Legacy not Liberty as in Australia.

Also Subaru has a nine pin connector and an adapter to OBD2 connector is available here.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWNX:IT

Suparoo You have shattering news. It seems a special Subaru scantool is required. You mention a made up scan tool and free software. Could you please expand on this.

I have now read vincentvega's details. The cable available plus Subaru Select software is the go. Now I may be stuck with my 9 pin to 16 pin adapter unless there is away of utilising it.
What is the current cable cost? The last update was 2006.

You will find that the USA has had OBD2 since the mid 90s, where as Australia didnt get it till later.

That ebay plug adaptor wont make your car work with OBD2, it just means that if you have a SSM scanner with a 16 pin plug, you can use it in your car with its 9 pin subaru plug

Digging deeper I have discovered a cable and software that works with a laptop running Windows. Evoscan total cost is about $97 including std air delivery.
These combination covers early model Subaru Liberty with nine pin connection and Subaru Select.

A low cost solution at last!!!!

The ecudatascan will also do a very good and comprehensive job @ about $500 for a stand alone in vehicle product.
