blowing smoke??? need advice please.... longish post sry.

Post by subelover » Mon Apr 17, 2006 6:37 pm

hi, i own a 1989 l series wagon ea82 carb model. 285,000kms with the standard lifter rattle. ive had the car for 12 months now and over that time the car has had 3 services( every 5,000km ). now the prob ive got is that once the car is warm ( it runs fine) coasting down hill off the throttle say 4th or 5th gear 80-90kph there is an awful lot of smoke absolutly pouring out the exhaust. once the road levels out give it a bit of a rev and vola no smoke. whats happening here? ive heard that the oil fets trapped and cant return to the sump? is that correct? look any info or advice much appreciated cheers

Sounds like valve stem seals to me, not really sure though.

I have nearly the same problem with my EA82 powered wagon, only happens on banked 4wd / gravel tracks (like on the outside of a lake or dam).
It got me a bit worried this weekend just gone, at a guess I'd say its something to do with high oil pressure causing a leak in a seal somewhere, perhaps the stem seals.

Biggest question really is: what colour is the smoke?

i have a feeling this has some relation to crankcase pressures...

have you have any modification to these tubes?
im guessing for some reason, you're getting a mass amount of oil down the gullet of your carby.

next time this happens, stop, and pull over. open the airfilter housing, and see if there is an abundance of oil there.

other people have been discussing this issue previously.

Might be worth checking your PCV valve.

I'm with the valve stem seal conclusion.

Had same problem with a VW years back.

Hmm... mine was white smoke.

Black smoke indicates a very rich fuel mixture, is your carby in good nick?
