camshaft adjustment

Post by masterguitarshreader » Wed Feb 16, 2011 2:20 pm

my l series i bought about 2 months ago with a great service history and under 200,000km on the clock has started that lifter ticking noise we are all familar with but is constantly ticking whilst driving and idlling only on the passengers side, in the work shop manual it sais to check the camshaft adjustment first does this mean the timing of the cams or the tightness of the belts there was a new timing kit put about 20,000 ago help would awsome

I'm going with Timing Belt adjustment and at 200,000kms it's time for replacement. Whilst you're there I would replace the Camshaft Seals and also all of the seals involved with the Oil Pump.

Lots of engines with sloppy timing belts have a secondary symptom of noisy HLAs.

Check timing belt tension first before blaming anything else.

If the noise is gone, then you know you're on the right path.

Then replace all the timing belt stuff, idlers, tensioner, cam seals etc.

You don't want to replace all of this and then find you really do have noisy HLAs in one head because of an oil feed issue etc.

Lots of work down the drain.

So check tension first.
Regards

Gary ;)

Why has no one talked about this being an issue for possible noisy HLA's??? I put up with an engine that did it for the best part of 18 months. The EJ sounds much better now so I can't complain...

Will have to remember this for later me thinks!

The only noise I've ever heard from loose Timing Belts on the EA82 is a dull tick (more of a cluck noise) through the dizzy. I remember years ago, I tried about 4 dizzy till I thought all of them can't be making the same sound :???: But if someone comes in the shop with ticking HLAs then I go straight to the Oil Pump.

wen't to my local subaru specialist after checking the belts where tight enough, and hla,s being still nosiey he said all he would do is do a service and put some additives in the oil the see if it will quiet down a bit, when i asked about them getting replaced i asked for a price just for curiosty sake and he said i won't do it on a car that old, just wondering whould replacement heads do the trick and anyone knows of a place for getting these thanks

Oil change and additives do very little to stop the noise in my experiance (1 in 10 times it may reduce the noise). I'm a betting man and would be happy to put $1000 on the nose of the oil pump. The oil pump service kit from Subaru is less then $50 and your local Subaru guy should have seen this before. I also agree with your serviceman.. the lifters are very expensive to replace (parts & labour) but if the noise hasn't been there that long then do the oil pump (cheaper option) and go from there.

My old ea82 had it.

REplaced the oil pump as soon as i got the car and it did quiten it down a little bit.

For the rest of its life i put the nulon lifter free up and tune in the oil with a good quality thick oil (penrite hpr50) and it wasnt quiet but it was acceptable.

now i have the same noise to deal with on my patrol hhaah.

You can replace your oil pump cheaper - by buying replacement rotors, shaft and seals. Worked a treat on my EA82. Still had some tick on start up for a couple of minutes until a little warmed up.

When I got fed up with the lifter tick I settled for the best fix... An EJ  Haven't looked back since and have not experienced the lifter tick since

Yeah.. I only replace the Oil Pump spindal and cog if there is too much wear (check with feeler gauge) otherwise it's just the gasket and O'rings.

Bennie.. I like the way you fixed the EA tick

Me too! I'm still cruising around looking like mr green -> And I HIGHLY recommend this fix, as I'm sure others who have used this fix would agree

Just need a set of standard offset 14 inch rims (a crossbred kit instead would be super!) and that fancy AWD locking centre gearbox then I'll be sweet - and would probably be time to move on to a new body...
