Three x 20mm welch plugs in all my EA81's
An old dog was telling me the other day the old school method of drill hole in plug and use an ezy out to bind into the plug and pull it , rather than try spin 'em. Gonna have to hold him down one day and pass on any more wisdom he picked up hanging around my great uncles workshop in Smelbourne.
Got this snippet coz i was tellin' him about me bashin' the EA81's welch plugs and they got stuck inside. I managed to get 'em out with a magnet and screwdriver to flick some. another came through the manifold water hole.
So, 3 welch per side.
Just rip the rocker covers off, fill radiator with water and pressure the set up if you must and see if plugs drip

Ok i have a drip tray under the engine, has been there for about a month. Since i put it there i got the engine running for about a week, then i thought i better not wreck it so i stopped. Now each week there is more and more amounts of coolant. Haven't looked under the engine as yet, will do soon. Thoughts?
Cheers Cam

So, the water in the oil, where did it come from? The welsh plugs inside the tappet cover? [makes sense if below is true]i have milky oil in the sump, rad is down, oil n water in the air filter (from breather pipe)
just curious about boxer geography, as im yet to see one internally, ....so the tappet cover has oil in it [as on normal motors], yes, which drains back into the sump? The plug sockets are oil sealed from the rocker cover?
The water in the air filter might? have come from the breather, but i doubt the oil would have [how would either have gotten into the breather pipe, i'd be looking for a point of entry for BOTH the water and the oil in breather IMO]

I wrecken they were mixed in the engine, and then the substance came up the breather into the air filter, as it was all through the pipe.

You mean the PCV hoses? they connect directly to rocker covers and go straight to the air filter box. When I had leftover coolant in my sump the breather hoses were the first to clog up.leevvi wrote:The water in the air filter might? have come from the breather, but i doubt the oil would have [how would either have gotten into the breather pipe, i'd be looking for a point of entry for BOTH the water and the oil in breather IMO]
If Cam has a leaky welch plug coolant would drip into the sump, oil pump would pump it into the oil etc making the white sludge which then gets all through the breather hoses, into the air box and up the dipstick tube.
Sorry Cam I keep forgetting to take that pic for ya

Here ya go, circled in red are the welch plugs I believe and in blue is where the rocker arm assembly bolts on, just for a bit of reference. I haven't used these heads, had to take them off because the intake manifold bolts are still embedded in the holes
And just for giggles pic 2 is the other side.
