Rwd-ing a gen 1?

Post by thelman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:18 pm

Hey all. Got a couple of lobs, both manual awd. I wanna know if I can convert 1 to Rwd? And I wanna wack an auto in the other for the Missus, keeping it awd. How hard is this?
Rides: Rupert, 89 Grey Touring Wagon. Olivia, 92 GX Liberty AWD Wagon.

You can convert manual to auto but in the Libs it's a huge job because they are controlled buy their own computer (TCU). I would suggest you find an automatic car and sell your manual one.

As for converting a manual AWD to RWD then you just need this...

EJ engines are not known to be low rev torquey things with fine throttle control .
To go RWD you would have to somehow lock the center diff and omit the front drive shafts . Then the R160 diff isn't going to cut it strength wise so need an R180 or even R200 rear diff .

Really you are better off finding some cheapish factory rear drive car with decent power potential and with adequate driveline strength . Nissan do things like Silvias and R32 Skylines and both have far better RWD drivelines than a converted Liberty . Much stronger gearboxes and six cylinder torque .
Can be cheap to get into if you look around .

A .

Wouldn't AWD be an advantage to dirt circuit driving. As Adrian said, the EJ22 doesn't really have have the power to drift.

Who said its gonna be kept ej22? And if it is, who's heard that little tt rumour? Everyone's got a Nissan/Mazda/woteva. The thing with dirt circuit is, that I like to put on a show, my last car was a tc cortina with a midmount 347 sc Windsor. And it will (unfortunately) be getting a commodore diff, but with no gm parts inside

Dude if you wanna do it, I say do it.

I googled this a few months ago and it has been done, there is a write up on a different forum somewhere. I think you may even be able to buy kits.
Essentially you weld up the centre diff, dissable the unessesary FWD components, and make sure the RWD components are up to the task.
You can take off the front drive shafts and diff and plug the holes up with alloy plugs.
You could always just take the bevels out of the diff too.
