Is it worth anything?

Post by Damned67 » Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:35 pm

Hi All,
Time to part with my trusty '98 Outback, as it's been replaced.
I'm just trying to get an idea of what it might be worth, other than driving it to the wreckers for $100. It's seen better days, but still a trusty steed. I still drive it between Brisbane and the Gold Coast weekly, and its never let me down.
The Bad:
The red paint on the roof is shot in spots (I could probably give it a cut and polish, but why bother). Actually most of the paint is pretty dodgy, looks like it's had a bit of a touch up from a dealer at one point.
The drivers door has a nice dent in it.
There's a small dent on the leading edge of the bonnet.
Suspension is reaching the end of it's life span.
Seems to have a small exhaust leak (or maybe the cat is shot).
The seemingly typical shifter bushing is toast.
While I haven't noticed it slipping, I'm not sure how much life the clutch has left (re: don't need to depress the clutch too far to change gears)
Oh, and it's got over 400,000ks on it. Engine was supposedly replaced about 120,000ks ago, but I've got no way of verifying that.

The Good:
It's been really reliable.
It's got a set of Audi alloys with Goodyear Wranglers on it.
Front CVs were replaced about 60,000ks ago
That's not much really, is it?

Not sure what it would need for a roadworthy/safety certificate? Probably at least a suspension overhaul and whatever the exhaust issue is fixed.

I just hate the idea of it going to the wreckers when it's been so reliable. I'm really quite fond of the car, but with 5 cars currently in the driveway, it's got to go.
So, I guess there's two questions:
a) is it worth selling to anyone other than the wreckers? and if so,
b) what would it be worth?

If nothing else, the rims and tyres have to be worth something to someone?

Cheers!

Yes it's worth something.
No I don't know how much.
Sounds like a good 1st or project car.
Defianatly not worth sending to the wreckers.

Dunno about the project, but it would be worth something to someone!

Agreed. Maybe take a pile of pics and put it on ebay for cheap and see what happens.

Cheers

Have your tried calling a certified Subaru parts dealer, they usually require a VIN when buying parts and may be able to tell you what engine number it has(or should have had) at original sale.
I havnt tried myself but it might be worth a shot, then you know for sure if it has been changed.
