Yeah, usually 3250 but it could just be the difference in the tacho. At 110km/h it should be about 3500rpm. And if it was an auto you'd be looking at 3500 for 100km/h and ~4100 for 110km/h. It could be both. If the oil seals on the pump are sucking air that'll cause a tappet issue. Or the tappets could be worn - but they tap away naturally anyway and have a mind of their own.l series mad wrote:it being typical ea 82 does tha mean tappets or oil pressure?
Rim size won't do anything - it's the tyre size that will change the diametre and therefore your rolling distance per revolution. If you do go with the larger tyres you might find your economy drops out and you use more fuel due to trying to spin the tyres while the engine outside it's power/economy zone.
I don't know how anyone with an EA cruises around on 27's - they must be real gutless wonders.

the bigger the tyre the further it will go per engine rev so in theory could use less fuel, but if you need to squeeze loud pedal more to go than you would with a smaller than bigger tyre you start to reduce efficiency. A manifold vacuum gauge, better known in Commodore speak as an economy gauge could help. Steeping down a gear getting revs up a little to get the needle in a more efficient zone may also help, may not either.

- new seals on the oil pump including the shaft seal - sometimes a new shaft is required if a groove is worn in the original
- up the oil pressure with the 3mm spacer behind the pressure relief valve spring
- remove the cam boxes (painful to clean up and seal again) - replace O ring and clean out the oil galleries including the spring and ball in there (I remember there being one, but I'm not 100% these days)
- while you've got the cam boxes off it's a good time to prime up the hydraulic lifters after doing the same with some liquid that would clean out any varnish etc that could have built up in the lifters.
I believe the lifters go noisy for a couple of reasons:
Lack of oil pressure getting to them over a period of time; the internal spring in the lifter going soft, the lifter's head/piston wearing against the outer casing so tolerances are not as tight and oil passes rather than pressurising the lifter.
But that's just my theories...

you can only try 15W50 - or try the CAT oil Phil recommends.
I run 15W40 in one EA82, that if left to itself over winter , gets down to about 2C in the shed, will tap like nothin' else until it gets heat soak through engine and oil, goes quiet again. Will try a 10W next winter to see if any different or maybe CAT oil - but titally different temps to Darwin

the grade may have to be thinner than 15W50 like 10W40, but emphasis on diesel engine oil is for its extra/better/more generous detergent package in the oils makeup and may need time and distance to do its stuff to clan sludge out if sludge is its problem - remember oil is not the only reason they make a racket - go the Diesel engine oil first, go CAT go ?
