So Close yet so far // Brumby vs Hail

So I am guessing most would have heard about the hail in Brisbane this week, well unfortunately the pride and joy brumby that my father and I had just finished and got on the road was a victim.

I was rushing it to my girlfriends house to put in the garage and got caught in the worst of it. There are dents on every panel some bigger then a cricket ball and a couple chipped it right back to primer. The windscreen and all the indicators including repeaters are cracked. The force even snapped off the windscreen wipers.

And we were just about to assemble the complete custom interior, now it will be a fair time until I can afford to fix and get it resprayed

So, this sort of post really needs pictures but I haven't had the desire to look at the car since it happened so will have to update this in the next day or two.

On the upside it has been unbelievable to drive since all the work.

Backyard Brumby I know how you feel mate only it must be 10 times worse than what I felt.

I too got caught in a hail storm here on the Sunshine Coast with my Forester and I felt so sick in the stomach as I was driving home I came close to throwing up.
Luckily, I escaped with no damage or marks whatsoever, the hail was small but it it was hitting with such intensity that it sounded like I was in a tank and hundreds of elves were bashing it with hammers, I was expecting the windscreen to shatter at any moment, it was terrifying to say the least.

All the best with the recovery. Once you've mustered up the courage to take some pics to share I wouldn't mind having a gander - then feel my stomach churn

Thanks for the kind words guys - pictures will be posted soon (bit busy at present). I'm determined to restore it again as mechanically it's in great shape. I've organised to have a new windscreen to replace the shattered one (which had only been in the car for a few months) but I'll need to find some new front indicator light covers, if anyone knows where I can find some please let me know (1989 model).

Ok so don't have full photo's yet however here is one of the windscreen being replaced and we have already managed to get a new bonnet from a local wrecker so will have to prep it and add it to the collection of panels to be painted.






And we picked up a pneumatic dent puller so will see how well it works on the rest of the body.

Sorry to hear about your car:(, my brumby got nailed by hail a few years back when that terrific hail storm hit ipswich and brassal. I'd like to help you out, I've got a spare set of front indicators and headlight surrounds but its for the dual light set up. I can't remember what your one has but if thats what you need you can have them. let me know

Such a shame after all that work was done and all the high hopes after it was done. I'm hoping you get it back to how it was.

Sure do, saying that we rebuilt it once we can do it again!

Have already got the repeater for free but the front indicators will be a little more challenging. The panel that covers the window wiper mechanism has some insane damage. A hail stone bigger than a cricket ball has completely bent the panel in.

Almost thought about transferring everything over to a new body (possibly a t top) but it is the custom hardtop, lift kit and all the suspension and brake work that would take too much to transfer.

We will try and pick up any panels we can cheap and the rest give the dent puller a go. Then sand it back and prep it ourselves in order to get it resprayed

Seeing those dents brings back sad memories, I'm interested in how that puller goes, I brought one of the hot glue types and that worked supisingly well, but its time consuming, especially when you're new at it. agian best of luck with it james

Yeah I used a very cheap version of the glue based dent pullers and was surprised how well that worked however the glue was so frustrating to remove each time. I am hoping this will be a much quicker alternative. Hopefully I will get to give it a go today and I will keep you all updated.

This hail is amazing and destructive

Here in SA, while we have extremes, we have never had hail that damages cars, but it seems a seasonal occurrence if you live in Sydney or Brisbane?

How big are these bad boys?

That is definitely the worst hail I have seen around in a couple of years, my cars that were at home only had golf ball or smaller dints. The ones that hit my while I was in the brumby were cricket ball sized mixed in with golf balls.
