95 legacy engine replacement!

Hi there I have a 95 legacy (I think) manual wagon with a blown head gasket and I'm wondering what options I have for replacing with another 2.2 litre....

I have done my research and know lots that don't but I'm wondering if I can use a Gen 1 engine as they have dual port exhaust like mine.

The head gasket is only pitying pressure in cooling system and water into the exhaust so may not be to expensive to fix but by the time I replace timing belts water pumP bearings and seals etc it will add up but be more reliable.

I've found a few 95 liberty engines for $300 but apparently they are single port ago would have to replace headers well Then have less performance exhaust options.

Any reliable info would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum Turbodan!

I've got to ask - are you in Western Australia or WA in the USA (not sure of the state that goes by that abbreviation)?

I'm 99% sure that Australia only has the twin exhaust port EJ22s. Unless the engine with the single exhaust port is an import...

The EJ22 from the Gen1s will be a direct replacement - just drop your intake manifold onto the block for your electrical wiring to plug and play as it should. The issue with this is that you may have the same issue (insert time) down the track.

Even though the head gaskets/water pump/timing belt and the other little costs will add up you'll know you've got a good engine for a long time after that if the job has been done properly. A replacement engine could have the exact same issue even before you install it, or as I said, it could be a week/6 months/2 years before an issue arises...

It's your call, but it can be done as I've said above ;)

We need more information - If hes from WA more likely he would have normal EJ22 which would have twin exhaust port... i havent seen an EJ with single port yet...

You have an good chance to drop upto 1998 (australian version) EJ22 engine with small changes which is unlikely if it was 1994-1998 EJ22 in your Legacy.

EJ22 are pretty solid engines and I havent really seen an failed EJ22 as they normally can be straight replacement or doesnt happen. Ive seen cooked EJ22 and still going.

Yeah I'm in western Australia and the car I bought is a gt lookalike with legacy badge.
Can't figure out exactly which model through decoders because they all say different for different countries but the model code is BG7BK3J and the vin is JF1BG7KJ4SG007625
I don't know if it's imported or a liberty that's been modified (ganador mirrors, 18 inch BBS rims, coilovers, bg/bh seats and sports exhaust)

It's my first liberty as I've only ever has older subys and I really like it.

I'll put up some pics once I figure how to..... :cool:

JF1 means Aussie car
BG means Gen 2 Liberty

All EJ engines are dual exhaust port - are you talking about DOHC and SOHC (single and double OverHead Cam ?)

Gen 2 Outbacks have DOHC 2.5 motors. I think all other early (pre 98) non-Turbo EJ motors are all SOHC - not 100% sure on that though.

But anyway to answer your question - any EJ motor from a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Liberty will fit.

I just had a look at the photos - just check the VIN number stamped on the firewall actually matches the VIN plate. Also is it just a turbo look alike or is there a turbo motor under the bonnet ? If not then why not put one there :)

Cheers it's single overhead cam I'm pretty sure because the rocker covers look narrow and it is n/a.
Probably Chuck a secondhand motor in to get it moving and slowly get another motor rebuilt with a little bit of work done to it.

That's right and as it gets further into it it becomes region specific and as far as i have gotten from researching (have heaps more info but left it at home) is 2.2 n/a dual range and is not American or Japanese domestic market so that leaves European and Australian so is most probably Aussie if not I'm not sure what differences there would be but i suppose I'm about to find out.....
Vin stamp on firewall matches compliance plate as well

OOPS - I was wrong about the VIN - I was told by Transport Dept a while back that the 17digit VIN was Australian only. Or maybe I misunderstood what they said. Either way I stand (actually I'm sitting) corrected.

Its a possibly that the rear door has been fitted from Legacy that was being wrecked or already wrecked from Japan? but the VIN is Australian.
