EA dual port heads

I know it's probably a dumb question but does anyone have or know of a pair of dual port heads off the early 1400 ea engines that may be for sale? I don't even know if they were ever released in Aus but I would be keen for a pair.

Proper dual port heads from the EA62 that have one exhaust port pointing down, and the other pointing rearward?

Good luck! You would have better luck importing it from the states

Why not get some 'Sub4' heads from Ram Performance?

I am no expert but from what I can acertain they are ea62. The problem with SUB4 and other aftermarket heads (other than the price) is that exhaust port is still very restrictive. This is for a cheap project, I don't see the point in spending huge money it. I would just modify the EA81 heads but I think that may be waste of time aswell because the exhaust has little scope for improvement.

Well, the old wrecker has sold up most scrap and gone to smaller shop like outlet , he had a funny looking little Subie engine on the ground, out in the weather with an exhaust port that I thought came out the front of the head - same thing ?

A capacity of 1400cc would mean EA63 heads. They are dual port (on the early versions before 1975) and have one port at the rear and one port on the front of each head.

The EA63 heads can be modified to fit a EA71 by welding up and changing the water cooling jackets but I think you would be struggling to make them fit on an EA81. You would also have to get the camshaft made from scratch. While the EA63 camshaft will fit the EA71 block it does not fit the EA81.

Why the camshaft? The dual port EA63 heads have the exhaust valves on the outside of the head and not in the middle (Like the EA71 and EA81).

Your best bet would be to find a set of dual port JDM EA81 heads (and the correct camshaft).

See how dedicated Weber was at the time to a small production run emgine ??? And no big time stuff for the EA81 ... :( in big numbers anyway - someone must be hoarding the Safari bits ???

Thanks for the info guys. The ones I am after are the ones in the bottom pic (EA62 4 port) Steptoe, if you could check your local bloke I would make worth your while, I wouldn't ask you to do it for nothing.

The JDM 4 port EA81 is not one I have heard of, are the port configuration similar to the EA62?

Just an FYI the picture Gannon posted shows '2 port ' EA63 heads built after 1975. Prior to this EA63 heads were the same as the '4 port' EA62 heads. Note that they are not really '4 port' or '2 port' but dual port or single port heads

You will have far more luck finding dual port EA63 heads in Australia than you will EA62. The dual port EA63 engine came in Subarus from July 1973 until 1975.

If the EA62 (1300cc) was imported into Australia it would have been in far smaller numbers than the EA63 with dual port heads.

I have several dual port EA63 engines but the heads will not fit on an EA81 block...

Where is everyone getting the idea he's trying to put these on to the EA81?

Velocity Boy only mentioned modifying EA81 heads in post #4 - from what I can read into this he's got an EA63 or close to it and is after the stock heads for it - or something like that anyway!

Thanks again guys you are a wealth of knowledge. I am confused now, what I ideally would like is the heads that have an exhaust port at the front and the rear of the head ie; 2 seperate exhaust ports. Also I do indeed want to put these heads on an EA81 (but if not I will use a complete ea71) but I am interested why they will not fit an EA81. I am aware of the different cam and water jacket mods but what else makes them incompatable to an EA81?

the heads might fit but look at the water transfer - it's not in the inlet manifold.....

It was quite a gangly exhaust that was kicking around with the donk in his yard - two years ago ?? sent you PM vb

velocityboy, EA63 heads will not fit on an EA81 engine as the spacing between the cylinder bores is too wide (ie the gap in the middle of the pistons).

EA63 heads can be modified to fit on an EA71 but you need to weld up and alter the water cooling jackets of the head to match the block (they do not line up otherwise). This has been done several times before so I imagine it would not be too difficult or expensive.

The picture you have uploaded shows the water crossover pipe for the engine block, not the water cooling for the inlet manifold. On early Subaru engines the water crossover is external for the block halves (as in the picture) on later 'fatcase' EA71 and the EA81 engines the cooling crossover is incorporated into the engine case halves, so there is no external pipe. There is still water cooling in the inlet manifold like all EA series engines.

Remember if you want EA63 heads on an EA71 you also need the EA63 camshaft (which does fit in the EA71 block). Heads will not work on their own...

Just to throw my two cents in...I noticed they were selling dual port heads for the ea82 on rockauto.com. Might we worth taking a look at.
