I have an EA71 and EA81 so I have both options, either get the dual port (2 exhaust ports) heads for the ea71 or just modify the ea81 heads and use that motor. Like everyone else I'm trying to get most power for the least effort and without chopping up my 1st gen Brumby to put in a ej motor. What do you guys think would make the most power out of the 71 and 81 options?

EA81 *I believe* will make more power straight up compared to the EA71. I'm sure the likes of Paul or Jonno will elaborate though!

The EA81 was more about torque than power. Heck the 'dirty' EA63S made more power than the EA81... But less torque.

When new the EA71 made around 50kW compared to the 54kW of the EA81 (4wd versions - 2wd had a little more)... Not really a lot in it!

Those flygas and SUB4' heads are nice, but so is a F430 Ferrari;) The difference between 50 and 54KW's is scary, I think the starter motor on my last engine build made more power than that. I am just going to do some mild tweeking on the EA81 and see where it ends up, I'm determend not to get carried away on this one,,,,I think.

The EA71 works very well in the Ugly model but the extra weight of the MY model, slows it down too much. I have had both the EA71 (in the 1980 MY wagon) and the EA81 (in the 1982 MY wagon) along with many Brumby's over the years.

I would go the EA81 with twin carb (or weber) and port the inlet and manifold and also port and polish the exhaust side. Use a set of custom headers and a 2" system.

You can find them in the link above (somewhere above!) They're all there. 4 spark plugs per head - looks all good until you get to the exhaust - and find that they've kept the siamese exhaust

I thought if you were going to all this effort you'd also do the exhaust ports as individual ports for best performance possibilities...

Cheers

Sorry I got my wires crossed :( I've only seen the pics from above and don't know if the SUB4 exhaust is siamese or not.

Apologies

With the exhaust divider coming all the way to the surface like that, if you were keen, you could shape 2 x D shaped pieces of exhaust pipe and place them back to back, and then angle them apart so it gives you 4 true exhaust ports

I don't think it is that the ports are siamesed so much as they are restricted in the stock heads. The total size of the port at point the 2 runners join is more than adequate but in between the ports is a water jacket that goes around a head stud hole and this makes a massive restricion, especially on one port. At one point this port has to take a left then a right turn and at that point the port is as small as 12mm x 36mm. I have worked out a way to remedy this, I will post some pics when it's done.

So yeah... I finally found some photos and the sub4 heads are 4 port heads, you can see the additional exhaust port at the side of the head, on the angled part(the front on RH side, the back on LH side) thats how they dodge around the pushrod 'galleries':

It'd be nice to see some photos of the exhaust side, but I guess this will do for now ;)

I only have one thing to say about those pics: I want one.
But unfortunately, even I have to admit I would just go EJ cos it's just too easy & cost effective.

Cheers Jake
