MY fuel tanks and fuel level senders

G'day all,

So there's been some talk on the bookface that the fuel level sender units are different between the digi dash and the analogue dash setups.

Does anyone know more about this - or if it's accurate information? I thought they were all the same and was considering swapping one of the two units I have into Sunnie the Brumby in the hope that it might make a low fuel light (that's apparently there) work.

Also, I'm sure I've read somewhere AGES ago that the MY touring wagon's fuel tanks are larger than the fuel tanks on the brumby/GL 4wd wagons. 5L difference rings a bell with me - anyone know more about this? Or has some specs from a factory manual they can share?

Has anyone got any form of parts cattle dog for MY ? This would help confirm.

Historical discussions in here about tank capacities of both MY and L series.

I have a tank from 89 Brumby that I am willing to see how much measurable water it holds - one day. Noted Vortices claim 60 litre tanks, think L sedans were 55 - same flippin' part number in the cattle dog !

My 82 touringwagon has a 55ltr tank(ive run it empty) . I swapped from the digi to an analog cluster and the fuel gauge works fine, albiet a little bit worn out. I highly doubt they changed the sender. I even initially used the stock wiring, same colors and all.

+ 1 for '82 Touring Wagon having 55 ltr tank ...

My '86 Brumby has smaller tank @ 45 ltr ... ( with 5 ltr overflow )

As to the Fuel gauges being different for Analogue Vs Digital - would be that it requires different resistors in the electronics ( something like that ), so yes it would make the gauge more accurate if you have the right one hooked up ...

Add : It would be good if someone could get one of each & compare them & post the results here ...

I think the sender unit is different between the Digi dash/analogue touring wagon models and bog stock dash models. Just a little something in there to turn the low fuel light on when it gets below a certain level.

A bit like the oil pressure sender being different between them; bog standard cars have a light switch, touring wagons etc have a proper oil pressure guage in the dash.

Sorry, I'm no help.
I have only had the 82 MY touring wagon in the MY model with the standard analogue dash so I can comment on comparisons.
All I can say is the car has a low fuel light on the fuel gauge.

My uneducated guess was it had something to do with the trip meter calculating the range left in relation to whats in the tank!?

The smarts for the low fuel light and trip meter will all be in the cluster itself. The led most likely just works with a comparator. My fuel sender from a tourningwagon that had a digital dash in it only has two wires coming from it. A GND and a signal. Why would they change the sender ohm's range to something different when they are making different clusters. Much easier and cost effective to make the changes in the cluster itself.

Hmm ... thought I'd been duded, maybe they are interchangeable with later models - must of got bigger ? wonder if a larger tank would fit ?

funny how the early manual states the 4WD MY of 81, 82 got 45litre tanks. I swear I've put 60 in mine from empty, but that might have been dollars

That means Steptoe in a couple of years unless you get that difference right you will be telling us your tank holds 120.

Must be pick on steptoe night.I once ran a tank to empty, on purpose - 609km and only ever put a few more litres of petrol in it - swapped to LPG. Once ran out on stupidity too

I have a tank, a bucket and some water so will be able to report the bucket capacity soon...WTS!
