should i get an l series?
Hi all, having recently done a big trip up north in my sierra i have decided to sell it and get something a little more travel friendly. There is some thing about the l series that i have always liked but seeing as i have only seen one off road in the flesh ihtough i might ask a few Qs before i commit. I was thinking of geting one as my next car and was wondering if with a few mods such as a 3" lift+bigger tyres (27s?) would this be a suitable car for my off road needs. I live in hervey bay so regularly go to fraiser and weekend trips to dbl island and other similar places around the area (all mostly Sand but nothing extreme), the thing i liked about my sierra was that i could go to these places by myself if need be and not have to really worry about getting stuck or having any major dramas (sierra was running 30s with standard engine and a 3" lift), could a l series realisticaly offer the same sort of trouble free traveling. Any help wolud be appreciated thanks guys. Also if there is anyone close by that i could maybe meet up with a check out their car that wolud be really good.

Yes go an L series.
In Qld there are HEAPS of them 4WDing.
Also consider having a look at a few of the web shot accounts that people have posted on here (look at their nic's) and the pics and vid section then you'll see what they can do.

Thanks guys i have decided to buy an L series and turn it into a touring machine so am now in the market if any one is selling or knows of any for sale. I was also wondering (amoung other things) if the mags that everyone seems to be running (sunnies i presume) are 14'' for the 27s and are a standard fitment for the L series and can be brought new or do i have to hunt some down?

yes the mags are 14" the 27 i run are wild conquerer supertrippers they are somewhere around $110 a tyre and IMHO are a great sand tyre.Try getting on to byb-01 i think he was bringing in 14" rims for a good price. Also you'll need at least 2" lift to run the 27's ,however i think 3" lift is a better combo.the trading post and local papers seem to have L's for sale pretty regularly.

All depends, but to give you an idea i have 5x14" Pug's for sale and i am asking $50 a rim. Keep an eye on the 4Sale section.
This being said you can also look at Desert rats (about the same price) or Scorpion rim (approx $185each new).

Hey also think about maybe getting a L-series 'touring wagon', cause they have power steering and other power bits and pieces, so maybe consider hunting one of those down. personally i love my powersteering, makes ya day when ur trying to park. personal prefference really.

And get one with a RX turbo engine in it, like mine!GTlegs wrote:I'd get an 1989 Touring Wagon. For you dollar, you'll get electric everything (ecept seats), velour trim, more headroom and fuel injection.
