Servicing the L for the first time

Post by daveosubi » Wed Dec 13, 2006 10:39 am

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I wasnt sure which part of workshop to put it in.

Anyway Ive finally got my subaru on the road and am now looking at servicing it, Ive got a mechanic friend to help so thats alll good but I figure Id better chase the parts and fluids.

My car is an 89 dl 4wd wagon with 206000 kms, its a carby manual with no mods, oh yeah and itll be driving around in melbourne.

Id just like to know what the good oils/filters plugs etc. are for the car.

Ive searchd a bit but havent found much (oil is too few a characters to search for)

So far here's all ive come up with,

Shell eco 10 Oil
Nippon Micro Oil Filter

Any comments/recommendations?

Thanks

Oil filters are best off going for a Genuine Subaru item, about the same price, but better filtering. Oil is basically personal, as long as it is the recommended oil for your model.

Genuine = Nippon Micro.

As for oils, I'd recommend a good 20W50 in your favourite brand, ie Valvoline XLD Premium or Penrite HPR30.

That will be because your new oil is thinner. The "old engine" oils are usually particularly thick.

alex said its a high km oil too, which'd be the same as the older engine one. the shell older engine oil is also a 20w/50. so i dunno bout the power claim.

Yeah I figured it would also be a thick type of oil but it must be at least a little thinner than the other stuff. I can't think of any other way an oil can give a car more poke...
Somebody should try running their engine on vegetable oil...or WD40....or Water.... :)

Sounds like you've just volunteered your new EJ for some vegi oil pioneering.
Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

Thanks for the replys,

Ended up going to repco and getting the parts from there. I was in a hurry so they'll have to do, but Ill defiantly try get some subaru oil filters for next time.

I also used castrol something or another oil (whatever ford use for servicing) well the price was right anyway. I cant remember the weight but theres no smoke and it seems smooth so far.

Looking at doing the gearbox and diff oil next, anyone recommend one or an additive for gboxes with whining 1st gears?
