Hi,
I have found that the compression rings on one cylinder ( the passenger's side front cylinder) are stuffed. Confirmed by the compression test and oil down the plug hole method.
Looking at the Gregory's manual it looks conceivable that the piston could be removed without splitting the block...access gudgeon and remove via gudgeon hole and manipulate the piston up and out.
Is that a possibility or am I just wasting my time thinking about it?

Looks like I didn't need an answer to this one. The pcv valve isn't working, the thing has been burning oild down the carb for who knows how long and the compression rings in one cylinder were gummed I think.
I poured half a container of supercheap injector cleaner down the plug hole, replaced the plug, disconnected the coil and turned it over. The hydraulic effect basically locked it up and I left it for a while.
After 20 minutes I turned it over a few times, then connected the coil again. Apart from the fact that you couldn't see the neighbours or following traffic for 2 or 3 kms it was OK. I then took it for an Italian tune up for half an hour (ie rev the shit out of it) around the local streets. When I got back I checked the compression again -it had been under 100 lb it was now around 150lb which was the same as the other cylinders - so I'm assuming the rcompression rings were gummed up by burning oil.
It was then I started looking at the PCV system and realised that it was not working - valve not working at all.
It could of course stuff up in an instant, but right now it is running really well.
:P
