Moreton Island on the weekend

Post by Red Beard » Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:42 am

Gday everyone

I've just got back from a 3 day hike around the northern end of Moreton Island, and it got me thinking as to the capabilities of my unlifted gen 3 outback. Some sections of the Bulwer-Blue Lagoon road looked like I'd belly out on the soft sand and bring me to a halt.

Has anyone on this forum taken unlifted outbacks to the island with much success? I've read the trip report from the qld subi club where the lifted outback drove across the simpson desert, but thats more mods than I want to do at this stage.

It was a great trip on foot however, and the others in the group (I ran it as a university bushwalking club trip) all had a blast. I've posted a few pics on my flickr site if anyone would like to see!

Can't give morteon specific info.Have seen quite few unlifted outbacks, some even with low profile tyres,up on bribie. From what i can remember of morteon the tracks aren't any worse than bribie.Travel with a group if you can and carry a snatch strap.

So maybe the outback is a little more capable than I give it credit for.

I'm not planning on driving over there, but now that I have the outback I'm more aware of what kinds of vehicles I see off road. Apart from a couple of suzukis and a single RAV4, it was only large 4x4s on the island that I saw!

One of these days I should go for a burn up to Rainbow Beach before they close the beach access and satisfy my curiosity!

If you ever decide to give it a go, my unlifted Outback will join you for the undoubtedly interesting experience :)

We will need a big boy to tow us out!

Sounds like a plan :)

I'll let you know if and when it happens!

Which suburb of Brissie are you from? A bit of an exploratory trip around the tracks near the glass house mountains would be much more possible in the foreseeable future!

Cheers,
