outback how many kms on a motor
outback how many kms on a motor
Hi All
Looking at purchasing a 98 outback with 240 000km on the clock
Just wondering if any one has an idea of how many kms you could expect out of a 98 outback motor that has been serviced by subaru all its life and also is a country car.
Another idea was to put a wrx turbo motor in the outback in the future for a bit of extra power when the std motor becomes tired , has this conversion been tryed?
cheers
Brett

If it's gotten that far and is still good and no smoke then I'd expect another 100k out of it providing it keeps being looked after.
Engines are rarely an issue on cars nowadays, it's more the suspension components etc that becomes a problem. I would be expecting to be looking at struts, springs, bushes, wheel bearings, cv joints, steering rack in the next 100k, providing these haven't already been done.
Is that the one at Uralla? If so I'd call it for a good buy, seems to be a decent car and especially for the dollars being asked.

IF it was been well serviced, if the oil is still golden brown/golden oil colour then I would expect the engine will go for more than 100,000kms. Same story with mine one, has no carbon build up and oil is always golden brown between services, now currently 257,000kms and I would expect mine to go over 350,000kms hopefully! But downside with high kms cars is - bushes needs replacing, CV joints etc... but if you do keep looking after it i would say it'll last for a while.. Thats true Subaru for you..

Funny that this is is very similar question I posted that other week, and the Outback I saw had similar kms and same colour, some of these of this age have 1/2 the kms, so thats why I have backed off buying the one I saw with no history.......or I go the way you mentioned, and factor in an engine swap etc. Might look around at some private sales to get better feedback and price. But I have hold off buying one anyway till next year, as I need to see how work ends up for me later on this year.

I wouldn't call that a steal, seen better deals getting around... You can get a Gen III for near to that money now...SWAMP wrote:This one is in Maitland area, here is the Ad

Yeah I think it is better to spend 15k for a gen3 with around 100,000km to 150,000km. Seems to be the best value area.
I drove a gen 4 outback the other day, they seem to drive a lot better than a gen 3, but at $24K, I think I would go for a xt forester, but they don't have the low range, not that there is much of a reduction in the subi's.
I would only take along the beach every now and again surfing, and the odd dirt track, nothing full on!
