Dakar 2008

Post by Jimmy G » Sun Dec 30, 2007 8:43 am

As many true believers know, the Vulgarian holy month of Dakar in nearly upon us.
This year there is a Subaru Forester entered with backing from the Subaru factory ( see http://www.dakar.com/2008/DAK/RIDERS/us ... gages.html - competitor number 360) - hard to think it will be competitive against the works "Pajeros" , "Hummers" etc but will be interesting to see how it copes. Surely someone here could trick up a Brumby for 2009!!!

I think the pretend "Pajaros" , "Hummers", "Touregs" etc burn through $40,000 per day. Sadly , the Citroen 2CV Sahara is not entered this year.....I think they are still digging it out of the first sandhill encountered last year.

Theres a few RAV4s in it too, don't have much of an opinion on them, so it would be good comparing.
It be good to see how modified that forestor is going to be, most of the other entrants pajeros etc are not what you buy off the showroom floor I believe.
Heard its about 10G for a motorcycle entrant, maybe USD?, that might be a doable $for many.

A good series to watch is "Road to Dakar" - it featured Charlie Boorman, Ewan McGregors mate from "Long Way 'Round" and "Long Way Down" - it shows exactly how hard and demanding it is for a privateer biker to do the race.

...not to mention the number of fatalities amongst the riders.

I've done some serious desert crossings and across Australia stuff on dirt bikes and would love to try the Dakar but it really demands respect. Unfortunately these days I'd just be doing it in my dreams  but I will be glued to the tv from Jan 6 to Jan 20

I heard on the radio at about 2am this morning that the Dakar has been cancelled this year due to security concerns unfortunately. First time ever.
