ridiculous genuine part prices, have your say

Post by vidler » Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:28 pm

yeah thought this would be a good topic, list your quotes you've had from subaru in regards to whatever part your chasing.

ive just called them about a new front inner cv joint, they gave me two prices, one for the boot kit, which includes boot, 2 metal cable ties and grease. all that for a grand total of $73.65. compare that with Malz $11.90

i then got a price for the whole cv kit, joint, boot etc etc. they want $395 from japan!!! my god!!! compared to Malz price of $95

who else has found a ridiculous price on a genuine part?

I got a price yesterday for an part that connects the steering wheel to the indicator assembly to make the cruise and horn work again in my daughters car. $475

So, I rang Sunspares to find out how much for a second hand one. $1500 because they won't sell it with out you buying an air bag as well. It has nothing to do with the air bag except for the wires for the air bag run through the harness as well.

Oh I see. Must be nothing. Pet hate of myne. People bitching and doing nothing about it. Maybe if you get enough crappy prices together, the message board admin may submit it to Subaru Australia.

Carry on

yeah this thread will achieve absolutely nothing, but possibly save time if someone was thinking of getting a genuine part from this list.

I now have to recommend Alan's CV Joint specialists is osborne park, just supplied me a new inner kit, and had the ability to think outside the box and give me a larger boot off a hilux which will cope with more cv angle and extension. cost $110 so that beats subaru hands down:)

I know this wont achieve much, but Subaru took $27 dollars off me for a Allen key with a plastic coated handle to fit the special screws that hold on the genuine roof racks, have not been back for anything else yet...........

thankfully i have both keys, one for rola and one for genuine subaru.

they do sell some good priced stuff though, i got a spare key with the plastic moulded subaru bit on it for $11, got the stainless steel capping for the tailgate on the brumby, that was $88 but given that they still stocked it i was amazed, other than that ive been buying stuff for my B4 project

bonnet, $1100
headlight $580

A year ago, I was trying to source the little plastic harness thing for a factory clarion headunit... I was thinking about .20c, When I was told that I would have to buy the complete wiring harness for $1500, WTF, who would do that, just for a headunit?

Remember that it is fairly common practice in the auto industry to quote a ridiculous price if you simply don't want to do the job / order the part because you know it's going to be an absolute bitch of a job getting it right.
So you just quote a ridiculous price to the customer so they go away and stop bothering you :)
I suppose it could happed at a Subaru parts desk, might depend who is on at the time...
Although yes, I have experienced the rediculous prices at Subaru for some parts, like once I priced RX rear disc brake hubs, was something like $1700 from memory.
On the other hand sometimes the prices for genuine parts beat the pants off aftermarket prices, just depends on what you are after.
I always price things up from many sources before committing to purchase.
